horrible people & lovely people!

a topic that is sadly too common- horrible people who abuse their horses and treat them like a machine not an animal. also people who decieve other innocent people about a horse with serious problems :(

this has happened recently to a new person at my yard-

lovely couple who havnt had horses in 20 years because of children, decided to get back into horse ownership and riding by buying an old cob mare- 23 years old, who is a lovely friendly girl who within a few days recognised her new owners and calls out loudly when they arrive.

they paid £800!!!! rediculous for a 23 year old who has done very little in a few years, so a wrip off, which i think is really unfair, the old owners obviously saw inexperienced coupe i mile off and upped the price....

but thats not the frankly horrible part- honestly if i met these people i would punch them! she was underweight when she arrived, 'because she is old', but has been here 2 weeks and with 2 meals and grass is putting on weight with ease. she eats like she has never been fed and what a luxury a meal is! the day before they got her this old mare was taken on an 18 mile fun ride, despite being clearly underweight and not being ridden in ages :( strangley she had been clipped less than a month ago.... something odd with her coat. the couple got the vet out and she has cushings, without a doubt the old owners knew about this but tried to hide it and sell her at an over inflated price any way

makes me angry, but also sad, a lovely old mare who has worked hard for them for many years, but once she gets a bit too old and ill they get rid of her just like that. i know old horses are expensive to keep, but i will have mine till the end unless i finacially become bankrupt! or if not be responsible and find them a loving retirment home and not flog them off and hide a serious illness

but the happy end to the story- after 23 years, she is now in a loving home. despite the massive unexpected cost of cushings medication and vets they are keeping her and love her to bits, she went for her first walking hack this afternoon in the sunshine. so glad that this lovely old girl is finally getting the treatment she deserves :D

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

This had me welling up - but I'm so glad she's now found a loving, caring home.

Like you, mine will be with me 'til the end.

It is horrible when people sell on old horses because they are of no use to them anymore, it really annoys me. At least this old girl has landed on her feet and now has loving owners and is receiving the care and treatment she needs.

This is one of the reasons i have decided not to sell Charlie, you can't guarantee them a home when they leave your care, unless someone i know wants to buy him. My horses will stay with me until the end and will be taken care of and when the time comes i will have them pts and not pass them on.

Those new owners sound lovely!  A similar thing happened to me with Queenie and Noah but I wouldn't have changed owning them for the world - they taught me so much and it was so rewarding seeing these elderly, abused horses having a lovely retirement and learning to trust me.

I love elderly horses and if I ever have the space/time/money for another one I'll jump at the chance.  I never even sat on Queenie but she was a beautiful old thing and when I found I would never be able to ride her, it never entered my head to send her back.

Well done to your friends, I wish there were more like them!

Oh bless the new owners, I know how hard it is to have a horse (or two) with problems, but the love they give back is priceless. I hopes he has a long happy retirement, bless her.

This made me very upset as I have a 23 year old that has Cushings! The disrespect that the old owners have given to this mare is horrendous. The older ones require extra love and care.. My chap owes me nothing. He has worked very very hard for riders over the years as well as myself and my mum and he has done an amazing job. Those owners are disgusting and should be ashamed. Thank God she's landed in the hands of nice new owners. I hate people selling on older horses anyway. I'd rather die than have Parsley go to someone else.

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

If I was ever lucky enough to have the funding I would have a home for those poor horses that needed a loving retirement home.  I seem to attract those needies with special needs and would love to be able to help more, we owe it to them as so many "serve" humans well for many years then are just cast aside, pts just because they are old or poorly. We wouldn't do this to a fellow human, so why our equine friends?

Re: horrible people & lovely people!

I have had 3 horses, my first horse Tonka was so protective of me so trusting, but his start was not good as originally bought by a riding school from Stow Horse Fair from the Gypsy's then School closing and I was one of the only 4 people who could ride him, brought him home after about 18 months then that was it he became a part of the family for 21 years died aged 30 still miss him, then I took on a rescue ex-racehorse called Lara so underweight and poorly, she had a trust problem to start but came to want me to love her so much, broke my heart when she died with a twisted gut and just when we were getting everything sorted. Now Sabrina a Belgian Warmblood who the people who I bought her from did not tell lies but shall I say they left alot out so much so I possibly would not have bought her, was a lovely ride when I tried her, but now a night mare but only a short time together, never came across a horse which just planted or suddendly change from being ok one minute then a nutter the next jeykell and Hyde character, hoping TLC will come through escpecially as I am a paranoid owner also told I am too gentle and that Sabrina takes advantage, as I don't like hitting a horse but have to with her but with only my hand and never on the head, I never carry a crop or wear spurs. I want the horse to trust me and me them to become a partnership and like many horses if does something wrong gets told off which gives them the hump, getting the horse to do something to please rather than making it is what I try to achieve. Not as one YO I know who hated mares with a passion and was known to hit horses in the face, if I saw her do that to mine I would hit her in the face, she threatened to shoot mine, so moved to a better kinder yard.

I'm so glad that this beautiful mare now has caring and loving owners, she will live the rest of her days happy and content. I agree with you totally about this sort of thing happening frequently, I don't understand how people can lie about an illness or injury when selling a horse as this could cause the poor animal sufferiing and pain if it goes undetected and all for a few hundred pounds !! Our horses are family and we will always love and care for them, I agree with the others that many are just cast aside or pts because they are old or have an injury. It's so unfair.
