a topic that is sadly too common- horrible people who abuse their horses and treat them like a machine not an animal. also people who decieve other innocent people about a horse with serious problems :(
this has happened recently to a new person at my yard-
lovely couple who havnt had horses in 20 years because of children, decided to get back into horse ownership and riding by buying an old cob mare- 23 years old, who is a lovely friendly girl who within a few days recognised her new owners and calls out loudly when they arrive.
they paid £800!!!! rediculous for a 23 year old who has done very little in a few years, so a wrip off, which i think is really unfair, the old owners obviously saw inexperienced coupe i mile off and upped the price....
but thats not the frankly horrible part- honestly if i met these people i would punch them! she was underweight when she arrived, 'because she is old', but has been here 2 weeks and with 2 meals and grass is putting on weight with ease. she eats like she has never been fed and what a luxury a meal is! the day before they got her this old mare was taken on an 18 mile fun ride, despite being clearly underweight and not being ridden in ages :( strangley she had been clipped less than a month ago.... something odd with her coat. the couple got the vet out and she has cushings, without a doubt the old owners knew about this but tried to hide it and sell her at an over inflated price any way
makes me angry, but also sad, a lovely old mare who has worked hard for them for many years, but once she gets a bit too old and ill they get rid of her just like that. i know old horses are expensive to keep, but i will have mine till the end unless i finacially become bankrupt! or if not be responsible and find them a loving retirment home and not flog them off and hide a serious illness
but the happy end to the story- after 23 years, she is now in a loving home. despite the massive unexpected cost of cushings medication and vets they are keeping her and love her to bits, she went for her first walking hack this afternoon in the sunshine. so glad that this lovely old girl is finally getting the treatment she deserves :D
