Coughing Horse (also a roarer!)

 Hello all,

I think this might be a tricky one. The horse that I ride from a riding school has recently developped a cough, and the thing is it's quite worrying as she already has a partially paralysed larynx (I won't embarass myself with the spelling of the actual disorder!) and she makes the roaring noise when she works. This in itself doesn't affect her and she goes about her normal life quite the thing and can do a normal work load, she can jump and go out on hack etc and although she may sound out of breath she nevers acts it.

However since about Thursday (this was when I noticed it) she has randomly started coughing when ridden. Thursday was a very wet day so it couldn't have been dust that was effecting her, and then over the next couple of days she has also been coughing and in the dryer weather it's been slightly more consistant. It sounds like quite a dry cough and she has no nasal discharge that I have noticed.

Because it's not been happening for very long nobody has followed it up properly but I would just like to hear what people think it could be? I am going to speak to somebody today as it is worrying for me!

Any input is great appreciated :)

Is that the one?

Quite scientific literature but its written by an equine vet hospital so its reliable!

I'd think it could be to do with the larynx problem, but you should keep your mind open to something new such as an allergy as well, it's important not to focus solely on one thing.

Also, is it only when being ridden or does she cough during everyday life as well?

That's to one! Not noticed it in her stable but that doesn't mean she doesn't when I'm not there because I'm not with her all the time. It's when she is in trot particularly I've noticed it; I rode her on Thursday and it was at competition it started, in the warm up she coughed a couple of times and thought nothing of and then when she were trotting round before our round she coughed again, but when we were actually jumping she was completely fine, and afterwards she was too. However it was the last couple of evenings I've noticed her do it with other clients more consistantly.

At this time of year it could well be a pollen allergy.  However, as most people on this forum know the story of my lovely Joe, I won't go back into all the details.  Just to say I lost him aged 9 to gutteral pouch haemorrhage after having had a cough for a couple of weeks, if your horse does develop any mucus at all get him or her checked out immediately as a simple course of antibiotics or anti fungal meds could save his or her life.

Sorry to hear that :( a friend of mine pointed out that we have had a very dusty batch of straw recently and as she is on straw along with every other horse in her barn then this could well be the problem. She is having 3 days off in the field so hopefully when she comes back in she shouldn't be coughing and if it is the straw she will start again (obviously we don't want her to cough!) and it won't be anything more sinister :) thanks for the replies!
