** Lost all confidence in hacking alone **

My 13 year old mare is pretty much alright hacking out with other horses (although she gets quite strong and doesnt like being left behind so when everyone else is cantering off, its very scary as she jolts around on the spot doin mini rears until she can go fast enough to catch up). However when it comes to hacking out on her own, she will get to a certain distance, then start walking all over the road in uncertainty, slows down and starts backing up and jumping. My worst case scenario is when she full blown reared up on me, smacking me hard in the side of the head which stunned me, and span round continuously almost in the motion of a merry-go-round (up and down and around and around). Its becoming a very dangerous situation and almost impossible to enjoy a change of scenery from the school. Because of this, I have lost all my confidence and am terrified of getting back on her once I've had my baby as I feel she is going to constantly run out of the school with me (which she has done) or take off with me etc. Aaaah so frustrating!!! Any advice or help?

Sounds like she's napping. It could be a confidence thing so it's probably best to keep taking her out with others, but get her to go out front all the time, maybe start off with another horse next to her. You will need to be strong with her. When you do start going with out another horse get some one to walk with you at first. Or you could even long rein her out? Either way you need to be strong with her. Good luck, if all else fails you may need to get your insrtuctor or some one simular to hack her out for a bit.

Try hacking out with someone on the ground (if you can), it will give you a bit of confidence and also the horse, and you'll have someone there to grab the reins or step in easily at any point. Also schooling, loads and loads of schooling that you can incorporate into your hacking when she starts playing up.

I hope this helps, I lost all confidence when my boy did nothing but take off with me, we're through that now, I'm not quite sure how, I think it was patience and understanding. Dont give up :)

Its so hard getting your confidence back, even more so when I havent ridden her since I found out I was pregnant. So she is going to be even more daunting once I have had my baby. But I am not going to give up on her. She has done it before and I know she can do it with me. If I tack her up and walk on the floor with the reins as a leadrope, she will follow me anywhere (its what I did when I tried to get her confidence up going out on her own). I would walk with her to a certain point, get on her and walk back. Each time I would walk her further and further away and nothing seemed to bother her. Its more the going away from home part which is where she really tries it on. But it doesnt half freak you out and make you not want to ride. I have faith in her. Cant wait to get back on and show her who is boss!!!

It sounds like you have a good bond then, I'm sure if you did it before you can do it again. Also the time you have spent off her back may have been good, I've heard of situations where a few months off really changes things for the better. Just take your time with her, act confident, even if you're only pretending, but also keep safe.

And I'm sure you have already, but make sure nothing is bothering her i.e saddle, teeth, back etc

Oh, and spend loads of time on the ground with her, always good for trust/bond/confidence.
