Re: nerves at a show..help!

I used to be the most ridiculous person ever when it came to nerves at shows. Would go to pieces, forget my course and ride terribly!

Now I just think to myself, I do this at home. I'm just riding my horse. People do this every day! I also don't wait about for ages, because the longer I wait the more anxious I get. Just have someone there to talk to as well. Always helps! Apparently before I go in the ring I'm hysterically funny, and if you're standing waiting to go in next and cracking people up it washes away nerves. That and just time, I found that getting older made them go away?

I was exactly the same! Or I'd get a bit shakey. Then I'd go in and be like...crap...what is the course!!!! Also take your time walking it, make sure you can shut your eyes and remember it. If it helps go later in the class and watch people going round so you remember it!

all i will say is BREATHE!

i used to be terrified as i was the only kid in seniors, then we started doing really well and it was just coz i got used to the atmosphere due to it being more regular. then we had a break and for some reason i stopped breathing properly as i was doing my course, resulting in almost vomming and gagging once id finished and was exiting the arena! Not attractive at all hahaha! especially as it was a regular occurance! Had an even longer break now so hopefully that weird habit has gone haha!

I have found I compete best when hungover or slightly tipsy, so Dutch courage is the way to go! I wish I was joking.

so much love for that..

Id also suggest going to local shows that are really just a bit of fun nothing to competitive..just so you get about an about. i remember at one show where the atmospheres pretty relaxed my sister forgot the course and just shouted for directions so we all had to tell her, was quite funny.. also rescue remedy is really good, drops or sweet form i think you can get, very good for nerves !

Go into Holland and Barret and buy rescue remedy pastilles - not the tincture it's too fidly and I don't think it works as quickly - and they will help.  The fact you've got to chew them too gives you something to do!  Eat 2 at once as well.
