HORSES DON'T DENT, THEY DIE!

Please support a campaign I'm helping to run to raise awareness of horse & rider safety on the road. Many drivers need to be educated to PASS WIDE & SLOW - too many horses/riders are being injured, or even worse killed, on the road because these simple steps are not being followed. For example the latest case of the poor mare Ruby who was killed by being hit by an overtaking vehicle towing a trailer.

You can join in on the discussion on our increasingly popular facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/horsesafetyawareness/

Something needs to be done about this.

we pass two livery yards on our way to our yard and horses can sometimes be on the road where there are bends -  when my son first passed his test we made him aware of how to pass horses and also to hold back until he had enough room to pass, not to use his horn and to be aware of riders on the other side of the road as well as he drove us to the stables.  a pity that those learning to drive where there are horses aren't taught the correct way.   Adam said when he was learning he often went on these roads but hadn't come across any horses when he was out.

you never choose the horse, the horse chooses you

I feel that drivers do need to be educated on this topic. However, I feel it would help if everybody thanked the drivers for slowing down as the go past, and passing wide and slow. I know my parents certainly do slow down and pass wide, but some people don't as they feel riders are ungrateful. I know many people do say thank you, but it's the few people that don't that give riders a bad name. If everybody thanked drivers, then I think they would be more likely to slow down for us when we are driving on the road.

I was hacking out a few months ago down my country lane. Usually everyone is very good and slows right down which is good because my horse is very spooky on her own. A car came past at about 50MPH down a country lane and if my horse had been spooked it would not have been good.

Re: HORSES DON'T DENT, THEY DIE!

My husband and Sammy managed to get hit last year, despite wearing every conceivable piece of Hi Viz gear available.  The driver went far too close to him and managed to pull him right off the grass verge, the car bumper caught round his hock and pulled him 360 degrees round and onto the road.  Fortunately the bumper parted company from the car otherwise there would have been major damage to Sammy, as it was my husband ended up flat on his back in the middle of the road.  The fact Sammy has chunky cob legs was probably what saved him, had it been Blair then it would have been a lot more grim as he is not only taller, he is much finer.  Also a few years ago my friend was hacking out on a 13.2 pony and a girl in a sports car overtook on a bend where it wasn't safe to do so and had to pull back in sharply to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle, the pony got hit right under her bottom and ended up sitting on the bonnet, fortunately not injured although my friend ended up on her back on top of a kerb.  There was a pony bum shaped dent on the car (rather large I believe) and the girl was raging, she tried to sue my friend for damages through the courts although she had  been in the wrong and there were witnesses to prove it, in the end my friend got the damages of £2000 and the girl got a severe ticking off from the judge.

so satisfying when something like that happens! I hate people that are in the wrong and are so stubborn that they don't accept it. So it's great when they get put in their place!

Obviously, I'd rather the woman just drove safely and considerately in the first place, but I'm glad justice was done!

Re: HORSES DON'T DENT, THEY DIE!

it doesnt help when driving instructors don't pass horses sensibly, i'm lucky my dad is an instructor and will teach his pupils how to react around horses (has been my horse he's taught with a few times whilst out hacking, lol) but I've had an instructor pull the steering wheel out of a pupils hands to bring them closer to us, one leaned out of the passenger window to point an imaginery gun at me and Spangle...and the best one was when the hunt was on ( 80 + horses al gathered around the pub carpark and road, not to mention all the wagons/trailers etc and followers on foot) and this tosser instructor tried to get his pupil to squeeze through the lot of us, when a car was coming towards him =/ needless to say he got a few comments off everyone who passed him when he was stuck...the need aducating, i think if you can get through to top gear that would be a good idea mel as jeremy clarkson ANd richard hammond are both country/horse fans and obviously car drivers will watch this

Re: HORSES DON'T DENT, THEY DIE!

This is such an important campaign.  This wasn't such an issue when I was younger but now my daughter is riding on the roads its become such a worry with some of the drivers attitudes.  She was riding along the road towards the stables after a hack with a lady from our yard when a male driver in a van started shouting abuse at them because he couldn't get past them he was swearing and revving up his engine behind my daughters pony unfortunatley they didn't get his number plate but I really wish I'd been there my daughters only 12 but luckily Casper is good on the roads could've caused a terrible accident just for a few minutes patience.
