gelding downright dangerous if he has to leave neighbouring mare !

any advice please . A young gelding normally placid has become a nightmare to take out on a ride with his other field mates, is almost deffinately because ha doesnt want to leave the mare in neighbouring field , rider had to dissmount  as pony was ballistic , even lead back to field like a wild stallion , settled in two mins once he had ran over to mare in next field !  had a little advice suggesting he was "barn sour" and that maybe global herbs rig calm may help , has anyone else had a situation like this

Firstly, I would lunge the bejeezus out of him till he's too tired to make a move and call out when he's with other horses.

Then, I would move his field come hell or high water so he has no contact with this mare, and put him with a herd that will put him in his place, so to speak, and teach him some manners. Young horses can be rude, dangerous and downright nasty when they want something!

Good luck!

Keeping them apart causes more problems as its not all his fault, as a mare can be a right flirt as I know unfortunately as I have the same problem except mines a mare and broke through an electric fence with another mare to get to the boys as her boyfriend was having a lesson in the outdoor arena. I had my mare at the other yard with just mares and she was a pain with geldings close but ok when with them, now at another yard and its a mixed herd with only a problem as one gelding and the two mares. The YO has their own horses which are kept together and the one gelding took a shine to my mare over the fence.

hi thanks for replies , its not really possible for the sets of horses to move as they are family horses kept at home in two neighbour propeties. also this gelding is always walking around with his tinky winky out  .

I've been in exactly the same situation! Billy was a nightmare. And he was 9 at the time! Shouting, rearing etc. I was unable to separate them, or even stable him. Could it be that the mare isn't helping. Maybe putting them, both on something would help? I had Billy on Global herbs Rig Calm and it was the best of everything else I tried. He was stlll a challenge at times, but much less boisterous. Now I have him on a gelding only yard, however he's hacked and occasionally hangs out with 'women' and doesn't resort to his cave man antics. I would suggest that putting them as far apart as possible helps and so does putting your horse in a herd rather than having only one other horse for him to focus on.

In addition, have you had him checked by your vet? Hormones etc...He could be a rig??

I really hope this helps. Good luck. Let us know how you get on!

I have Sabrina on Hormonese by Feedmark which worked on my Mare better than Naf Oestress but with with a gelding its how old they were before they were cut, another old trick was to use Vickes vapour rub also tesco did one, you rubbed this around the nose of the male so he cannot smell the mare, this was an old trick which did work.
