Recently I have been feeling increasingly guilty that the beautiful Luna has become a fancy field ornament. She is only 7 - in the prime of life, and because I am just too heavy for her, she has been going to waste. I did have a couple of people ride her...but because she is not a novice ride, it's not really worked out (she was starting to think a quick canter up the road was acceptable!!). But a friend of a friend was looking for a neddy over the summer as her old horse has navicular and her young horse is not rideable yet (only 2) and so she came up to try her today and loved her!

 

So, after much soul searching, I have decided it is best for Luna if she goes away for the summer. I am going to check out the yard she is going to tomorrow...which is about an hour away.  I will miss her soooooooooooooooo much as I love that pony to death. But everytime I see her and think of all the fun she could be having I feel awful, so I think I am doing the right thing.

 

Anyway...tomorrow I go to look round her potential new home and if all is ok, she will be off to pastures new until October at the earliest. I feel wretched to be honest, but think it is the best thing for her and that I am being selfish wanting to keep her with me when she could be off having a fab time this summer.

 Awww good for you at seven she has so much potential and it is fab for someone to be able to do something for her to do!! I am sure you will miss her but if you know its for the best then that is great!!

Hope it is a lovely yard. I'm sure she will have a great summer getting out and about and doing things and it wont be that long till she is bck with you. As you say it is because you love Luna that you are even thinking about it as you want her to be doing something not just stood bout doing nothing.

Will you continue to look for a rider for when she is back with you?

 your amazing for doing this and feeling like this, shows how your putting your mare first rather than thinking about how much you will miss her..

Anyway. That is fantastic news Sarah although a heartbreaking decision nonetheless! I hope Luna and her new person (although you'll always be her mother) have lots of fun and continue to get along. Let us know what the new place is like xx

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

Hope the yard passes its' inspection then, and that Luna can go off for her summer 'holiday'.

It sounds like a wise decision, albeit a heartrending one, and I hope it works out  for all concerned.

And how is your back, and are you riding again yet?

thanks for the support everyone, I appreciate it. P.s - my back (coccyx) is much better thanks....back in the saddle - very cautiously! Although the first day back on board I managed to hit the deck again after a massive spook!!! Silly Dulcie....might just need some super glue!

 

Well, I went to visit the yard that Luna will be going to. It is lovely, with beautiful flat DRY paddocks, which are post and rail fenced, with a nice thick hedge down one side. There is a school and the stables are lovely too. She will be sharing a field with two other mares and there are fields with horses on two sides - they can reach over and groom each other over the fence. There is also a farm ride around the farmers fields. In fact it was so lovely that I asked if I could move there too! - sadly it is an hour away from where I live!!! lol

 

Bascially, I have no excuse not to let her go - it's only for 5-6 months and it's a lovely home where she wil be out and about, being ridden and having fun.

 

I am going to speak to my insurance company tomorrow to see where i stand with insuring her, and write a draft loan agreement using the BHS template. Then, all being well, I am going to take her next week..

 

I still feel wretched and next week i am guessing that I'll be a jibbering sobbing emotional wreck when I leave her there...but it's best for her and will leave me time to get going properly with Dulcie.

Aww, the yard sounds really lovely, you are doing everything right for Luna and have her welfare at heart. Good luck with drafting out a loan agreement as it's so important to have that in place before she leaves home. Just out of interest will you be keeping her passport with you or will Luna's loaner need it for any competition etc ?

I am tweaking the BHS loan agreement which seems pretty comprehensive. The loaner seems lovely - she has had horses all her life and wants something to ride over the summer as her old horse has navicular and her young one is only 2 so not rideable. I have found her as one of my best friends sold her a horse ten years ago and they are still in touch....so i feel a bit better as it's word of mouth and the fact that she has kept the other horse for ten years (it's the one which now has navicular) is a good sign too i think.

 

The yard really was lovely. She has to cross a very busy main road to get to the best hacking, but that shouldn't be a problem for Luna as she really is a star in traffic.

 

Interesting point re the passport and I've debated this with a few friends over the past few days. I know that by law, the passport must be kept with the horse's keeper so in theory, she should hold it. I am going to ask the insurane company what they think when I call them later as although I think she is trust worthy, I don't like the idea of handing it over really.

 

If I do hand it over, I am going to photocopy it and store it somewhere safe, along with the loan agreement.

It sounds like it will be a great home for Luna to be in. What about having the livery yard owner keeping the passport in their care just incase they need to produce it if defra ever turn up as they only have an hour to produce all passports for the horses on the yard. Would you trust them to have it? It is a tricky one about passports though isn't it as technically you aren't allowed to transport a horse without one. I would definietly talk to the insurance company and see what they have to say about it.
