My horses mane has been chopped off and not by me!!

Hi all,

Well the other night I was sat at home and checked my facebook account and I had been tagged into a picture of my beautiful spottie boy in his stable by one of the girls from my yard.  A few hours later I realised his mane was almost gone meaning it had been cut off. As you can imagine I was a bit dismayed and very upset that I hadn't been consulted on this spur of the moment thing that was being done to my pony!

I contacted the yard manager about this and she phoned me straight back in the morning to confirm that his mane had in fact not been pulled but cut off and it had been done quite late at night after the yard manager had gone into her house.

I know who did it but I don't really know what to do about it as I think there has been a misunderstanding somewhere.  I am taking Cracker to an inhand show which is a native spotted class therefore I thought he would need a full mane???  I did speak to the person that hacked off his mane before this took place and we had discussed tidying him up (exact words) I didn't think for one moment this would be the result particulary that I wasn't there.

Now I work full-time Monday-Thursday and I have a 20 month old so as you can imagine I am very busy so I know this particular person has groomed Cracker for me when I have run out of time not through me asking though I would like to add...however I do spend an hour and a half every day at the yard and I pay for turnout and morning checks so I am not neglecting him in anyway!

The thing is I am not quite sure what to do about this?  I am not out to fall out with anyone as that's not really my style but I think I need to nip this in the bud however I think she was more trying to help me than being horrible.  Also does this mean I shouldn't bother with the inhand spotted show in June?  His mane is a mess and I am really sad :(

Thanks peeps.xxxx

 oh bless you!!

That's absolutely awful :( you must be very cross...I know I would be!!

Although maybe you should just subtly drop the hint to her by mentioning the class you were going to do and how dissapointed you are...then mention that she should consult you before even thinking of doing a thing like that.

look at it this way it WILL grow back! know that's not much of a consolation xxx

Thanks Spanning!  It looks like a basin haircut! I can't describe how mortified I am. Think it was done with the best intention but I would never go and get someone else's horse out of their stable and chop it's mane off...

Bye bye June in hand show class - it was going to be first ever show so mega upset!

Hiya, how short has it been done. I have an appy x and her mane is naturally spiky.  Maybe you acheive this look to enter the spotty clases.

Its probably about 2inchs long so although he still has a bit of a mane its not really stuck up its just looks short and odd!

I will take a photo tonight!

I might be able to plait it I guess?

Oh I sympathise totally, I used to have a groom and I asked her one day if she could tidy Anya's mane as we were going to Rossdales (again) and wanted her to look smart. I got home went up to see the horses and nearly died, she assured me she knew how to pull manes but she had cut her mane so it was "nice and level" - its was awful and looked so unnatural not like a TB mane should look at all.  Anyway, it took a few months but it did grow out and I pulled it myself next time.

If your horse is happy lots of washing the mane with aloe vera, spay with aloe vera sprays (liek veterinary formula) and it will grow back - luckily manes and tails are growing like mad at the moment - no consolation I know - but it will grow back :-)

Oh dear, what a disappointment for you :o(

But as you said it would be your first show, maybe you could go anyway, I know without any hope of winning, but just for the experience? It'll give you an idea of how he behaves in that sort of environment, and maybe give you a few pointers to work on.

When I first had Tonka his mane was hogged and he was a Gypsy Cob, I wanted it to be left to grow long and the YO was insisting she was going to hog it again as cobs have their manes hogged, so I subtly said (not) Tonka was my horse and his mane to left alone, because of her it took a very long time to grow properly again years not months grrrr. Some people seem to take over and ignore the owner, this happens many times.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson & Chloe the cats.

you can get mane extensions and ready done plaits. I dont know if that would help.

 Brilliant solution soniadevereaux!

I would have a say thanks to the girl for trying to help but to consult you first next tie as she has cut it incorrectly and now scuppered you for the showing season. Be polite but firm!
