Manny in a pickle !

Well, went to field Mon am, and found Manny with his hind leg stuck through the fence.

I think he'd had a stretch and his foots caught on the fence.

He'd obviously been stood there on three legs for a couple of hours and couldn't get his leg out.

Had to cut fence to free him, fortunately keep wire cutters at the field!  Bless him, he was calm as a cucumber and just stood there! (good job it wasn't H, hed have panicked and made a right mess of himself!)

Tied him up and went to get stuff to clean him up, and came back to a puddle - poor soul must have been desperate for a wee !

Washed wound with mild hibiscrub solution, and called vet. Then plaited his tail and put an old sock on to keep it up out of the way.

She came an hour or so later, examined leg, gave him painkiller and something to help shift the swelling. And put this aluminium spray stuff on which seals wound so keeps it clean and dry, but it can still breath, and ooze if its going to. The wound is more of a friction burn than a cut, and looks sore. Its above the hock so impossible to bandage, so thank goodness for this spray!

Hes got bute and something else (cant rememer what its called) to have in food twice a day; so hes happy, gets an extra feed!

Walking on it better today, but vet said it will take a while for swelling to go down.  Being out's best so he can move around.

Here's pics of before and after treatment, just so you can go " Yuck!"

Bless him! Hope he gets better soon. My old boy used to always have some sort of scratch or bump. That spray looks amazing too!

OMG poor Manny - that looks awful, so as you say, it would have been so much worse if he'd panicked.

And that spray looks fantastic, sounds like the sort of thing needed in any emergency medical kit.

Big hugs to Manny, I'm sure he's enjoying life if he's having extra feed !!

Poor boy, that looks really sore. Hope it heals up quickly for him. Glad he didn't panic and make it worse.

Oh poor little man. He was good for not panicking and waited for you. I hope he gets better soon. xx

Re: Manny in a pickle !

Thanks guys !  Just shows how important it is to check them at least twice a day!

I know he hadn't been stuck for that long as there were 4 piles of poo round field, same as H had done in his paddock.   Even so, I said to vet, wish I'd gone up at 6am instead of 9am. Might have caught him earlier. Although on the other hand he may not have done it 'till after 6am, and then been stood there 'till the evening! Doesn't bear thinking about.

He's such an angel, so easy to treat!  Watched him have a good roll this morning, I was a bit worried he'd struggle to get up, but he was fine - OH said; anyway, its not as if i could pick him up and put him back on his feet! lol

ALUSPRAY is the stuff put on leg. I'd never heard of it before. Definately keeping some in my first aid box from now on!  As long as cut is clean and dry and no infection, it seems to serve instead of bandage to keep wound clean. Apparently the wound wont dry out too much, and crack like when using purple spray.

Oh yes - vet also using pics of his leg in an article she's writing, so Manny's leg's famous!

Thanks again for best wishes - I'll keep you all updated!!

That looks so painful! Poor lad. Good to hear that it's only superficial though. Also, that spray looks amazing, and I shall have to research it because it looks so versatile.

Hope manny recovers promptly!

Re: Manny in a pickle !

Blair did exactly that a few years ago with both hind legs, he was trying to retaliate to a shetland on the other side of the fence who bit him and he kicked out getting both back legs through the squares in the wire.  He had a lot of swelling and friction burns too from top to bottom (he'd been stuck a while and plunging around eventually bringing down the fence to free himself).  I used dermagel which does a similar job, and I also used Forever Living Aloe Vera gel on the less deep ones, he healed with no scarring thankfully.

Re: Manny in a pickle !

Just a quick update on Manny's leg -

Swellings just about gone now, the wounds also almost healed, and top layer of skin has dried out and is peeling off  - looks like snakeskin,( yukky!) which I'm trimming  as it comes off.  I'm actually quite surprised how quickly the swelling went, as vet said it could take a while, especially as he has cushings.

Only problem really are the flies atm. Nothing new there!

I'm now using aloe vera gel to soften the skin so It doesnt dig in as it dries. Thanks Rhapsody!
