my pony is pretty confident when it comes to jumping normal uprights and cross poles, but with anything underneath (fillers etc) he completely freaks out! Refuses, runs out.. anything so he doesnt have to go over it! 

I am hoping to do a show sometime soon.. and i know we won't do very well if he doesn't jump anything that he's not used to or 'looks scary'. 

Does anyone know anything i can use that will 'scare' him, but make him more confident? and any ways to make him more confident so he can just fly over them like he does with any normal jump without giving it so many looks?

how about putting bales of straw/shavings/hay under a pole. xx

You could try having the fillers/hay bales angled in towards the jump slightly but keep them out at the wings and then jump him over the straight pole whilst gradually moving the fillers in towards the centre.
