I tried a home made one last year, which I have to say had no effect whatever - can't rememer what recipe it was now though......

I generally use the Barrier one, the smell stays on your hands even after washing, it's the one I've found most effective over the years, although this year I'm also using Feedmarks Bluebottle gel for Captain as he hates being sprayed, and it does seem to work quite well.

The big problem I found is the bot flies which the other year seemed the size of sparrows, also  horse fly love the rider as much as the horse I found out, the other thing is the elderflower flowers in the horses brow band the smell is revolting. I also found out that a horse at canter cannot out pace the bot fly this was on Tonka who I was informed by someone who had paced me in a car was 36mph this out of a Gypsy Cob one of those ploddy cobs!
