 I was reading this on HorseForum http://www.horseforum.com/horse-talk/childs-first-horse-horse-vs-pony-122181/page2/ and it got me thinking... 

In the future, I want something that I can compete on. I want an athlete and I would like to do XC. :) But in an ideal world, I would have two. I'd have a cheeky pony and something bigger. I've got a big pony at the moment and will have him forever more..I won't outgrow him because I'm 5'1 LOL. I think he is the beeknees..genuinely. He's quick, he's naughty, he's strong and he's hilarious. I think ponies are brilliant anyway..but that is probably because I spend the majority of my time on them.

but then... I love things that are tall, slim and coloured..

 

Who prefers naughty ponies and who prefers horses?

 i would love to have got flick, when i was 18 like i am now, when she was still 12ish so i could have taken competing more seriously, cos i know now she could have done coloureds and hunter classes, and sj etc.. but i was like 12/13 and did it for the fun on it..

 

seriously though, i would love another Flick (shes my perfect, once in a life time equine) shes 14.2 and A HALF. so kinda BIG pony.. would love another one of her but about 15.2hh probably, 

 

i love the length on a horses trot, which you just cant compare to a ponies... have ridden one of my YO's horses who is amazing! real long strides, just amazing. nothing else for it. (this post hasnt actually any relevence..oops ) :D

 nonono. it is relevant! I too much prefer riding *as in serious riding* horses. I find them beautifully comfortable and find I ride a lot neater on them. I also wish me now (17 next month) would have had Parsley when he was like 6/7.. oh my god the years of riding and competing we would have had together.. We would of been an awesome team, I know it! :( 

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

My lad is 15hh, we compete in senior bsja and the big horses never beat us, I used to jump 1.20m on him bu now he is almost 20 we don't jump bigger than 1.05m. He wll let me know when he's had enough but for now he still tanks me round very easily.

The thing was I did not start riding until I was 16 so never had a pony as such as being 6ft 2in don't help also built like a brick out house, but was started on horses as large as 17.3h, but when lucky enough to have my own when I was 39 this was Tonka a Gypsy Cob 15.1h who taught me everything he knew who died aged 30 in 2010 his passing left a big empty space in my heart but after 21 years together getting to know a new horse is so difficult, but was getting there with an ex-racehorse rescue called Lara 17.2h who I had only for 12 months before she unfortunately died, now working with a Belgian Warmblood Mare called Sabrina 16.2h who is a difficult horse to get to know, as she should never have been sold from her old home, we are just starting to bond so difficult especially as she has fallen in love with a gelding and such a tart.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter.It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson & Chloe the cats.

 i like small horses ;)  or ponies x horse!  which is what i have a PBW :D shes the best of both worlds - beautiful movement and not a 'choppy trot' shes big enough for me which is probably quite important but shes a pony through and through - shes an icredible jumper and has that pony brain - jump anything off any stride and helps out alot even though shes just a baby! shes also as stubbon as a pony!! PONIES ALL THE WAY!!

Well i love riding ponies but i'm too tall for them. I used to work with ponies and loved riing them. The 12.2hh's were so fun and tricky to ride.

I own a 14.1hh gypsy cob which is the smallest i can get away with as i am 5ft 9. When she has matured and filled out she will be quite a heavyweight so no problem really with her taking up my leg. I also have a 15.1hh gypsy cob x tb who has been a fantastic horse in her time and i have done all sorts on her and i also have a 16.1hh irish sports horse.

Oops didn't say which i prefer. I like them around 14.2-15hh so large pony/small horse

I have to agree with Lydiarose.  I call Nobility my stretched pony :)  Haffies are technically ponies but he is one of the larger ones at 15hh poss 15.1 now.  I love how much character they have but couldn't have much smaller than him so he is the perfect mix really *gush*

I think until I was in my late 20's I loved ponies and being only just over 5' I could get away with riding them, they were so much fun and sharp - but I prefered to look after horses!  But once I was riding my warmblood I just fell in love with the long smooth paces and I think I actually rode better as I would find I sat tall and proud!

Now just looking after horses I prefer the horses as pony (Welshie @ 14.3hh) can be a handful and a bit too sharp as I am getting slower with age!!!

There is no greater gift than to share time with a creature of such beauty - The Horse.
