Does anyone else find that the longer they have been riding the harder it actually gets !! Tilly, our youngster is my little challenge atm, she has really pushed me out of my comfort zone lol. The latest issue is my contact, trying to get it just right is sooooo difficult but that is what keeps riding interesting as we are always striving to improve and to achieve the ultimate goal of being at one with our horse. As the title says I'll get the hang of it one day !!

I think  the longer you ride, the more you improve, and the more you get critical of yourself and strive to get it better, if that makes sense.  It's like once you've perfected (not that i'm at all perfect at anything) one thing you just start beating yourself up about the next thing xx

I have to learn to ride again after 21 years with Tonka, then getting Lara for a very short time now with a Belgian Warmblood Mare Sabrina, did not have a problem years ago with riding school horses but this is different as you are on your own for one the other someone in the local horse group said the problem is people go basically from a clapped out mini at the riding school to a sports car when you get your own, but I can say that the horses I was given to ride at the riding schools had a reputation most of the time as did Tonka who only 4 of us could ride him and he had nearly put some people off riding altogether. Confidence is something which also comes into it, me I suffered with the loss of 2 horses within 12 months then Sabrina nearly putting me off horses by kicking me in the mouth and chest when an idiot let a firework off in the middle of the day last October nearly giving me a free helicopter ride but had an ambulance ride with all lights, then she was frightened by some builders so would not go back to her stable and ended up at somewhere I had known for years only because I obtained my hay from them but my confidence was shaken there as I coud never do right for doing wrong always picking fault, and safety issues with barbed wire and gates so duty of care issues, so now changed yards which has changed both of us, Sabrina is still a madam but more relaxed possibly also due to me being so as well.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson,Chloe & Kitty the cats.

Hi Sam, I agree with what you've said, I think that the more we learn and the more experienced riders that we watch it can become a mammoth task to get everything in total harmony ! Yes, I guess that some of us are striving for perfection lol.

Hi Kevin, I have a similar situation to you, I have been used to my super safe Welsh D Tenor and now I have a Ferrari in the yard ( not the car, Tilly !! ) Tonight though I felt as though I was getting somewhere, she's only a youngster and still learning but she's so rewarding when I get it right. I have never ridden a TB before so it's a learning curve for me ! How are you getting on with Sabrina ?

Sabrina as with many other horses you seem to go 1 step forward and 5 back, we have just also changed yards then a new horse came ona gelding in the next stable oh! dear or words like that she is a total tart, also we have had a discussion where we fell out and now she knows she is not boss, my problem is I am a soft touch and don't like being harsh to a horse but if they don't listen they learn that its behaviour I will not tolerate and have not had a horse challange me like this before, now she gives me my space. Sabrina is now becoming better and a more relaxed horse than the yard before, have ordered some calmer to get over how she is behaving, basically watch this space as I feel she will become a fantastic horse, but I would love to know how she became this way in the first place.

I know what you mean, I feel like a sack of spuds most of the time, being bounced around; yet my son, whos only been riding a couple of years, sits perfectly and and looks like hes been riding forever!

It sounds as though Sabrina is settling down and enjoying her new yard and well done for reminding her that she is'nt actually the boss lol. She sounds a bit like Tilly as she can be a little madam at times ! I'm sure that Sabrina will continue to respect you, with Tilly it's all been about consistent handling, we just keep repeating things every day and she is now lovely to handle, tack up, groom etc.  Good luck with Sabrina and keep us updated X

I love the challenges of riding, keeps it fresh haha !!! That's one of the reasons I enjoy the young horses so much. I love the feeling of working towards a goal, and maybe it doesn't always go according to plan but that's half the fun. It's the best feeling in the world when you take on an unbroken or unschooled horse and turn it into a little star !!! Makes all the tears, tantrums (from the horses, not me haha !!!) and knock backs along the way all worthwhile !!!
