Why did he kick me?

Yesturday Tommy was right at the top of the field and so i went up too get him and he was fine to catch. We started going back down to the gate and about half way he started messing around trying to trot off kicking and bucking. I tried to keep him going but he spun round and kicked me then galloped off! I know i should have gone back and waled him back down but at the time i was alone and couldnt move, fine now got my sling! He is usually fine but is always harder on his own so thats what we were trying to work on.

Just wondering why he did this and how i can prevent it in the future any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks, Ella :)

Re: Why did he kick me?

I did a great deal of in hand work with my previous horses and at the last yard was told about my training methods which was not theirs, they would rather charge around for 15 minutes than taking things slowly and get the horse warmed up and also in hand you can achieve bonding and trust, so much so that a silly woman in a C3 Citroen sounded her vehicle horn right behind my 17.2h Chestnut Mare ex-racehorse and the horse did not bolt or rear but the car nearly lost its windscreen. My old Gypsy Cob Tonka would follow me antwhere and when I went into a coma for 3/4hr stood protecting me.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson & Chloe the cats.

Thankyou so much for all of your advice its good to know im not the only on!. We were using a long rope and a dually at the time but i think i need to wear some safety gear! I am going to do some more ground work as he really needs to trust and respect me. When im back in action hopefully i can sort the groundwork out again and keep it going this time!

Thankyou all so much great advice i will take it all on board!

Ella, a regular rope halter will be as effective (if not more) than an expensive dually. Reflect on yourself why he kicked you, how you got too close, how you didn't see it coming, how lack of prevention now causes you to treat what the horse has now learnt. Good luck hun x

If you were using a dually at the time and he still did kicked you then I think you didnt correct him soon enough or sharply enough. Its all about timing with correction halters, it takes practise to get right (I'm still learning and had horses my whole life! I second SarahEsen on rope halters being just as good. They put pressure on the nose and poll and some horses respect them more. They dont have to be expensive either, mine was £7 inc delivery off ebay. I also second always wearing a hat when handling any horse. I have been kicked in the head once and suffered a fractured skull, very painful I assure you and abit too close for comfort!

a pony is a child's dream,a horse is an adult's treasure.

I second rope halter. No need to fork out for a dually, they work better, less fuss and heck of a lot cheaper.

Spring is in the air, yes, but I still want the respect from my horse, and not for my horse to put me in danger.

With some knotted halters, you get extremely long lead rope with a leather end. I'd invest in one of them. Hopefully you'll only have to use the leadrope once. When my mare nipped me, I backed her up so fast. I asked, when she didn't respond, I slapped her chest with it. Now, when I have the knotted halter on her, she knows it, respects it, and we have no more issues.

I fully reccomend you wear gloves, body protecter and a hat. And have someone else with you.

Practise in a school, or before you get in the field, with walking, halting, turning, backing up so he KNOWS what the knotted halter is. You can't just shove it on and expect him to know A, B and C.

It works on pressure and release. So, when you ask for something, and he doesn't respond, you use the halter to put pressure on. The SECOND he does what you ask, release so he knows he's doing it right.

Good luck!
