Re: Coccyx injury - not allowed to ride for 4 weeks :-(

Hi, I know exactly how you feel.

I bought my first horse at the beginning of March and was really starting to get to know her - then last Thursday I had a black out behind the wheel of my car and end up in hospital.   Well, to cut a long story short I've had surgery on my face as a result of the crash am in pain that I can't imagine riding for quite a while - needless to say pi**ed of isn't the word.

I've sent my daughter down to give Mali a carrot and a cuddle today before she has her riding lesson and I'm hoping that she won't forget me.  I'm missing her already!  As soon as I can I shall go down and give her a carrot and a cuddle myself!

As long as you take it easy and don't annoy the injury hopefully you'll heal in good time and you can go back to enjoying you horse.

Take care

That sounds horrible I bruised my coccyx once and wow it hurt so i really feel for you! Well you never know you may not be out of action for as long as they say (although if oyu have fractured it you may be) but I had a small op 'down there' a couple of years ago and was told it would be 4 weeks before I could ride again, I was mortified! Anyway I didn;t last that long, 1.5 weeks later I was on bareback, 2 weeks after the op I used a sheepskin seat saver on the saddle and went for a hack round the block. Only walked though and when I spoke to the nurse she told me to do what I felt comfortable doing, she woldnt; be happy about me charging about of jumping but if I felt up to gentle hacking then I shoudl be fine just not to push it.

Re excersise, ther is the obvious lunging but that can get a bit dull for the horses every day so if you are comfortable being up and walking could you try long lining? In the school you can make it more interesting changes or direction, navigating obstacles through poles etc and out and about, if you have someone who can walk closer to the horse incase of spooks, which I did when I was getting Coco back into work after an injury instead of lead rein walking. I think its good for the horses to still work into a contact with tack on and go forwards without you next to them and is slightly less tedious than going round and round on a lunge line every day!
