 Hi all haven't been on in a while but could do with some advice 

Ive been spending a lot of time over the last couple of months with my 4 yr old, and am now hoping to take him on his first run ride. However, he can be unpredictable and will rear, and can be sharp. I am getting quite nervous about taking him but really want to if you know what I mean cause I think he'll love it. I'm just wondering whether to try a different bit for the ride just as extra brakes or whether this would be a bad idea. He's currently in a full cheek snaffle. He is very soft mouthed also so don't want to upset him. 

What do you guys think ?

 if it was me, I'd go! Go with a friend or couple of friends that have horses you feel safe/comfortable on if you needed to swap or something... I dunno really, I'm just a brave (probably foolish lol) teenage who will do anything. I'd pay more attention to what the adults say but if I was you, I'd go with a friend who knows what they are doing and wouldn't mind swapping if you felt uncomfortable about his behaviour. You never know, he might just behave perfectly ;)

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

I can sometimes be guilty of this too, but I would be looking at your confidence.  They often say if you want to know how you're feeling then look at your horse (medical conditions aside)!  I'm not a believer in using bits to change behaviour, so I'm not able to help you there. A youngster really needs a rider to give it it's confidence.

 think everyones said it above.. my mare went on her first fun ride last year despite having been hunting and basically done everything else, she hadnt been out for a while and loved it and thought itd be great to spend most the time with her back end in the air but was perfect in every other way! 

 

If you can i'd try and be one of the first or lasts to go so that you dont get masses of people trying to pass you which could wind him up.. especially as there are always people bound to pass at high speed! 

 

however, enjoy yourself !

 I wouldnt worry too much if he misbehaves, I compete at novice endurance and regularly see horses rearing , bucking and generally misbehaving. Last  year for Brent tor, I rode my friends horse as we had a total beginner with us so she borrowed my boy . My boy was a saint for her but my borrowed horse was a total bugger! He reared went backwads and bucked three times just waiting to go. He also shot off at too fast a canter at one point but thankfully we didnt crash into anyone. It was his first pleasure ride so I expected some excitement. He has now done three more and I am told is getting better, just dances on the spot , calls and snorts but no more rearing! Sometimes it does them good to just get it out of their system. I hope you do take him to the ride, I think you would both enjoy it. Keep yourself safe by leaving a headcollar on under his bridle and clip a leadrope to the front saddle d. If he gets too silly clip the leadrope to the saddle and ask a friend to hold the leadrope as you ride together so you have a bit more reassurrance he cant tank off.

Thanks all for your comments, i'm gonna bite the bullet and take him, and try and lose some of my nerves in the meantime.  He really isn't nasty, and has only reared when very scared....... so fingers crossed he'll enjoy it.  will let you all know how we get on, and yes Rosebudd, think i'll def aim to be one of the last actually that way i won't be worrying about what's coming up behind us.

Trying something new is never the right time try a new bit. You'll only worry him more and it's a terrible time to discover he's not comfortable with it !!! Pop a martingale on him and take a deep breath when you arrive, shake out your nerves !!! If you're tense he'll be tense and more likely to misbehave so smile, relax and remember that a fun ride shoule be exactly that ... fun !!!

 

Tuck in behind a more experience horse and just enjoy the ride, expecting the worst will make it happen, believe me !!! If he starts to act up give him a job to do, up and down the gears a little, some stop-start-stop-start, a little leg yield and he'll soon settle. The worst thing you can do is stiffen up and hang onto him, he'll wonder what the problem is and stiffen up himself and hanging onto the front end makes it very easy to rear !!! If you find yourself starting to worry while on board take a mental pause and take three big deep breaths, exhaling loudly (sounds wierd, but works) and smile or laugh, you'll be instantly at ease.

 

Don't worry, it's always nerve racking taking a young horse to something new for the first time but if you arrive with a positive attitude, you'll make it a positive experience for you both. Have fun !!!
