Is Hogging Your Horses Mane Cruel?

I was just wondering whever it was or not, i've never thought it was, afterall it's not cruel to shave a human's hair or a dog's! But i recently saw a post of facebook saying stuff about cruelty to horses, most of the things mentioned where obviously true, but iwas a bit confused as to whetherhogging is or isn't cruel xx :)

Re: Is Hogging Your Horses Mane Cruel?

i have an appaloosa and her mane is upright and a thin wispy tail. Fjords have theira trimmed upright too. IF you mean hogged down to the crest then as long as during the summer you help them against flies i cant really see a problem. Roobee with her foal last year. JJ was 3 months old when piccy was taken.

Cobs (not the traditional gyspy ones) are hogged for the show ring, as this is considered "correct" for showing this type of horse.  Some people hog their horses if they suffer from sweet itch too as the horse tends to rub the mane out until it's raw due to the itching.  There is usually a reason for hogging, and it doesn't hurt the horse so no cruel it isn't.  But as Sonia says if you choose to hog you need to provide alternative measures for fly protection such as a fly rug with neck attached, and a fly veil/fringe, not to mention fly spray, all of which a horse with sweet itch would be having and so would a show horse to keep him or her in optimum show condition.

We have a traditional syle welsh d whos mane is hogged at our yard, she generally doesnt have problem with flys apart from in her ears but that is no different thick maned friends. My loan pony Piper had his mane hogged last year due to sweet itch and has a fly rug with a neck, but Donna the welsh d- has no problem and does well without fly spray or a rug. I guess it depends on the horse.

It's not just a horse...
