Anyone feed magnesium???

Hi, it's been recommend to me a couple of times to give colours magnesium. Just wondered if anyone else does this and if/how it helps? He's barefoot and can sometimes be a bit tender on really stoney ground. He's fine most the time though. Thanks x

If you're looking to build up hoof, you need to feed biotin.. magnesium is used as a calmer..

Magnesium is very good for barefoot horses. I feed it to mine in the summer when they start to get a bit footy, i use calmag but you can also buy just magnesium from ebay, also brewers yeast is good for healthy hoofs for barefoot. The good side effect is it also can be used as a calmer. If you are interested i can give you a link to a forum for barefooters. It has loads of advice on there and you can find out just about everything you need to know from some very knowledgeable people.

Yes, I feed it to both Bracken and Monty, both barefoot  - started off feeding it to Monty after he'd had separated hoof walls and then an infection in one wall, and he also has flat soles which don't help, and as it really did seem to help I've started with Bracken as well, as although she's a cob with good feet, she does get a few little cracks  in the summer.

I feed the 'heavy' magnesium oxide from www.naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk  - it's a white powder that mixes in with feed quite well. They do a cheaper version but it's gritty and the horses don't like it, lol.

They also get a NAF  biotin mix, can't remember the name of it.....

Thanks, think I'll give it a go over summer then. He's got pretty good feet being a cob x but anything that helps is good! Could I have the name of that forum please micki? He gets brewers yeast already too and to be honest a bit of calming effect won't hurt with the little monster! Lol x

I used the heavy magnesium oxide last year.  Mare did not mind it but did not see any improvements personally.

i didnt use it for feet i used it as a calmer, had a complete adverse reaction at the time, its okay when used with her ordinary calmer and not in large quantities, for the feet thing ive heard its good although my friend used it on her barefoot horse and got some build up thing? dunno what it was but vet suggested it was because of that

magnitude by equine america is a nice type of it and cheap too :)
