Hi.. My horse keeps going lame in her front offside leg... I have had the vet on countless occasions over the past year, she has been nerve blocked and she has been x rayed and the could not find anything.. they were looking at her lower leg, whereby I am convinced it is in her shoulder.  I have had egg bar shoes put on because we wondered if it was navicular.. but that has not worked.  I have tried box rest but she virtually jumps out so that is pointless.. I bring her in so she has at least 14 hours in the stable every day wit my other horse for company and that does help.. but the minute I put her out she runs around like a nutter and makes it sore again.. when she i calm it gets better, but I cant keep her calm unless I sedate her.. which is not going to happen.  I have had her on bute in the past for a week and she is completely back to normal.. now I am thinking of putting her back n bute again just to make sure she is comfortable... I dont intend any heavy work, the most  woulddo if she was ok would b a nice hack out for a bit of variety...  anyone else had a similar problem...

I have a rescue gelding who we've had just over a year, and during that time he's been on danilon more or less continuously, due to problems following on from laminitis and an infection in the hoof wall.

The dosage has been up and down - up to 2 a day at times, but he's now down to 1 a day and that's being reduced gradually as well.

He's only 12, has arthritis as well, and if the painkillers give him a good quality of life, then so be it. He seems quite happy like that.

Ask your vet about Danilon - it's kinder to the insides than bute and far more palatable, in fact he really seems to like the taste of it, lol.

I buy it by the box - 60 sachets to the box, which is about £65 though it's gone up recently so that may not be right.

Hope you can find out what's wrong with your girl and that she feels better soon :o)

Thanks for that.. its really stressing me out.. What is so annoying is.. I know if she would only be calm rest it would be better.. but what did she do yesterday after a few hours deciding she was fed up.. she jumped out of the field and came back to the yard.. just for the sake of it... she runs around like a  nutter and then her leg hurts and she holds it up as if to sayl...why is it hurting!!  so frustrating.. I will check that out.. I only say bute because I have had it in the past and she makes a full recovery!!

Just out of interest, have you had an equine physio look at your horse?  The one I use was able to find things the vet hadn't found and was able to put them right too - worth a try at least.

My horse Havoc is similar to your mare, goes mildly lame occasionally in near fore. Usually when ground's hard. Had same thought, navicular, but vet couldnt pinpoint anything. He wears rolled toe shoes, which helps a bit. Mainly if im careful when ground is hard, he doesnt go lame now. Like you say its keeping them calm to give time to mend.

 

I also do stretches with his legs on a regular basis, which might help if its in her shoulder?

 

And agree with rhapsody, a physio might be able to help.

 

What about out 24/7 ? I find H is calmer if out all the time, rather than charging around if only turned out for a bit.

 

I've also got a pony on Bute long term for arthritus. Atm he gets 1/2 sachet every other day, but i would only do this if vet recommends,( as greyandbay says its not good for their insides; I didnt know about the Danilon, I shall look into this for mine; thanks for tip greyandbay!)

My horse went lame late last year on his right hind, and the vet took him in for a whole day to do nerve blocks, x-rays etc, but they couldnt find anything. We used a good physio who suggested that it could be his neck (?!). This turned out to be wrong, and we never found a cause for his lameness, so the vet put him on Danilon for around a week. He had been quite lame for around 3 months at this point, but after just 5 days of Danilon he was sound, and has been since!

I would highy reccomend asking your vet about Danilon- it worked wonders for me!

Bute is known to have side-effects longterm, but I have had good results using Boswelia, which is a natural herb and has been found to have no side-effects when used longterm.

I second what the others said, try a physio definitely if you haven't already - they can usually spot things that a lot of vets will not see. It might be something quite simple.

If your horse is stressing out being indoors, can you section off a 20 metre square in your field so they can move about but not charge about? If possible, it's better for them to be out anyway, I'd say.
