Age to start riding

Well, sometimes I feel left out at my stables, because most of the children there have been riding since they were 6 and even younger. I am 14 now, and I started daily riding lessons when I was just 12, so I've been riding for about 2 years at my riding school. Though I used to do small pony rides and hacks when I was younger, and though I can't seem to find any pictures of me riding when I was younger, I am abit afraid that people won't believe me that I rode a bit as a younger girl.  I am still looking for pictures, and should find some soon, but the point is, I love going to the stables, and feel I have my own horse there named Peggy, I've showed her once, and should be showing her again in the summer. I'm planning to go to otley college when im 16 or 17, so I would've been riding for 6 years or so. I've always loved horses, ever since I can remember, though because of never having enough money I couldn't afford to do lessons. Was 12 a good age to start riding, though I loved horses way before I was 12? I am jumping now by myself, and hacking myself and cantering myself too. Thanks.

i didnt start riding until i was about 11. I rode til i was 17 and then had a huge break and went back to it aged 37! IT doesnt matter when you start as long as you enjoy it. xx

Re: Age to start riding

My daughter started riding at about 5, then stopped when she was about 10 (not her decision sadly & only ever once a fortnight as we couldn't afford more).  When she was 19, I bought my two horses in the Jan & Feb and she started to ride again.  In the September she made the decision to do a degree in Equine Business Management and passed the riding assessment despite her limited experience!  One of my friends started learning to ride about 4 years ago and she's now 48!  Riding is more about hours in the saddle and quality of teaching than about age I think! ;o)

Re: Age to start riding

See I started riding at the age of 3 and I'd class myself as an experienced rider where as some girls on my yard started only 3 years ago and they seem to ride better than me - No matter what age you are you can always either start or pick back up on it. Some ladies on my farm are 40 odd and started after they had children.

Just listen and take advise that's how you pick it up ;) Everybody has to start off somewhere.

I didn't start riding until 2 years ago when I was 34. I don't think it matters what age you are. I don't know about others, but for me its all about the enjoyment that I get from riding. I'd wanted to ride when I was younger but never had the opportunity to, now that I'm earning my own money I decided if I didn't try it once when would I ever try it.

i didnt start riding till i was 10 got my first horse when i was 12 now im 15 i was never bothered by starting late at my yard dont get in a tizzy about it i think 12 is a good age because you know what you are doing and have the body strength to ride properly without damaging a horses back i wouldnt worry to much 12 is a good age just because people start young doent mean that there good riders :)

Re: Age to start riding

I started riding when I was twelve and was only having lessons every fortnight.

Didn't get my own horse until I was 24 and then had to start all over again.  My mare died last year so will have to start again when and if I get another.

It doesn't matter when you start as long as you are enthusiastic and willing to learn

Re: Age to start riding

I was very lucky with the fact I was born into a horsey family on both sides and I was litteraly bron into a saddle but only started fully riding lessons at the age of 5. I am now 14 and one of my closest friends is 15 and he's been riding for 2 nearly 3 years but he's a way better rider then me. My instructor lets him ride her younger polo ponies and he helped break in one of her horses last summer.

I think if you start older and learn with a good instructor you can learn better then if you start young and learn a ton of bad habbits. Also why do you feel you need to prove that you rode as a younger girl?

It's ok if you give up as long as you come back later to try again.
