Forget about fancy cars, posh houses and expensive clothes; all you need are animals, family and friends!

What is it that you generally feel nervous about?

AstiSpumante:

I think it's because my horse is scared of bikes/motorbikes and the roads I have to go down to get to a bridle path always have loads of them. When one goes past, he panics and will either spin round into the middle road (not great) or swerve into the bush or ditch at the side of the road or go cantering off down the road. This means that I'm constantly on the look out for bikes and motorbikes and when one goes past or approaches I feel like I'd be safer getting off and walking with Breeze, but I know that this isn't going to be good for his or my confidence!

Wel maybe you should start letting him get familiarw ith bikes. Get someone you know or ask someone with a bike to let you use it. Walk with Breeze close to the bike at times so he could start getting used to it. Also remember that you horse can always feel your emotions,so keep calm when you start to get scared take deep breaths and comfort your horse ty to keep him calm a well. Don't let him run away from the probem the hole time otherwise he won't stop doing it you have to let him know that the bike won't do anything to him.

I hope my advice helps and remember keep yourself calm and your horse willbe calm too

Take him for walks - get yourself a 12-foot line and pressure rope halter and walk him round your usual hacks. It's great for his confidence to see you on the ground as his leader, and it's safer for you because you have plenty of space with the line to stay out of the way if he freaks. If a bike comes by, keep calm, let him have his paddy (but don't let him tank off), and then continue the walk as normal. Don't get on his back until both you and him are completely happy and confident with bikes.

My own horse isn't great with bikes but unfortunately where we are every week a group of dirt bikers come by and sometimes I am out walking him when they pass. I take him off the trail, let him freak, and then keep walking. Any desensitization work you can do with push bikes, hairdryers, leafblowers, loud noises etc. is great because it will get him used to loud, moving objects. If you know anyone with a motor/dirt bike, see if you can borrow it to get him familar with it! Be aware that this will take potentially a long time and should be done gradually, so as to keep him happy at all stages. If at any time he's unhappy, take a step back.

When you do begin to ride him again, please please remember that getting off is not a case of 'him winning or you losing' or something that will knock your confidence. It's a matter of safety. Falling off and injuring yourself or your horse will knock your confidence - getting off and leading him will build it and keep you both safer. He'll also be able to see you more as his leader on the ground and take comfort and courage from you. If you ever feel afraid, get off.

Get in touch with a local Natural Horsemanship trainer - eg. Parelli, or Monty Roberts (Intelligent Horsemanship) - who can help you conquer your horse's fear and will do great  things for your confidence too! Good luck. :)

start with a simple downs walk, or even lead him along the trial you would take? this will help your confidence alot. and im sure he knows what hes doing, but if your really nervous about what he might do on the downs, you could ask a friend at the yard to test him on that path! so it will be familiar to him when you try!

goodluck! im sure you'll be fine! :) xxx

fair is fair.
