 Ok Penny is a big 15hh. cob that when she has her full feathers looks like she should be pulling a wagon. But she a has a great jump on her(shes 18 and still enjoys jumping overa meter)

But the other day we were at a pony club showjumping training rally and before we went in I heard some people saying stuff like"Why the hell did she turn up on that thing?" and " Shes cracked to think she'll get anything done with a carthorse like that" and " Why's a carthorse at pony club?" too quote a few. And this was coming from the MOTHERS AND FATHERS!. We ahdto warm up on our own as the instructor was dealing with 2 very nervous riders with mad ponies. All the kids of them were jeering at me (they had little sportponies that were so hot and fast) and their ponies were husling Penny. She was so good and didn't do anything but I told some of the riders that if they came near me again I would use me whip on them!(not messing I have a very bad temper) 

But I jumped the highest in the class,half the little "real jumpers" either messed up the course or bucked their little terrors of riders off. But as I came out of the arena one othe mothers came up to me and said(I am quoting here) "That's a lovely 5 year old you have there. It's a pity its a cob though. I've come across many in my time and once they turn 6 their jumping skill just keeps going downhill by about 10cms per year!"

In reply I said "Really?! Wow! I never knew that. Pennys like 18 so if it goes down 10 cms per year she must have been jumping about 2.20meters when she was 6! That interesting to know. Thanks"

You should have seen her face. My friends and favourite riding instructor were listening and they just couldn't stop laughing!

But why are some people just so bitchy?! I know not all people are like this but some people like this just give pony club a bad name for being bitchy. Like I am 14, why say these things to me about my pony which I have a great bond with which everybody says is totally clear. But she was about 40? WHY?!

It's ok if you give up as long as you come back later to try again.

 That's horrible:-(...... But good on you and your dad for telling them where to stick it.

My shire is 17.2h and she is just as sharpe as some of these ankle nippers.i was incredibly surprised at just how responsive and agile she was so I can vouch for the heavies.

Another very surprising ride is a Clydesdale, now these are big horses! Yet love some spee:-)

 

Go get you earmuffs, take your cob to these shows and show everyone just what your made of. Ignore the uptight bullies and go home proud;-)

 Heres another little tip for you after reading all this it suddenly struck me.....take your lovely horse to these shows and enjoy the looks on the horrible peoples faces when you do better than all of them Gob+Smacked= a very enjoyable thing to witness!!! hehehe

my daughter has a trad coloured cob, big and heavy -whose 20 this year.   we've had the same comments and not from 'pony club mothers' either .  William was well known at local shows, mainly because he used to win, showing, in hand, coloured, jumping, best turned out.  there's something very satisfactory when you have heard a  not very nice comment about him stood watching and he walks away with a first.  I can have quite a loud voice at times so whatever comment I heard I would repeat but putting in front, ""not bad for ............. whatever.......  just goes to show how good my daughter and her horse are, well done sarah and william another cup/trophy for the cabinet soon need another cabinet """  a bit embarassing for sarah at times, until I told her afterwards what I had heard.  William also used to do western so can turn quite quickly.  the nicest comment sarah got was at a show when a little girl's small pony bolted with her.  rest of the riders kept going round, sarah turned william sideways on and let the pony run into him to stop it and then made sure her and the pony were okay , the little girl's mum came over and couldn't thank her enough and said how wonderful her horse was, and  such a big beautiful horse . he got a big kiss and a treat off the little girl afterwards.  so ignore the comments, its annoying but I personally can't stand 'pony club mothers/fathers' who will spend quite a lot on horse. tack, rider but not on teaching the rider manners , or how to behave when their horse doesn't get placed and blame and take it out on the horse.

Well done for you for standing upto them.

Now dont any of you PC people shoot me down here but to me some of them have far to much money for there own good they always buy the best as in best horses (so they think) best Lorrys etc etc then when a normal person comes along with there much loved little pony/horse who is just as much part of your family then you are comes along they will do nothing but bitch even more so then when you beet them!

 

Anyhow why cant cobs jump big????can anyone here give me 3 good reasons why they cant???

 

There is no reason why our feathered mates can be just as good at SJ Dressage XC Showing Hacking Endurance then any other horse of any other breed in fact to me out feathered mates are better as they are more versatile as there are not many horses that are as good as they are for the whole family ok i have all Arabs and yes they are ok for most of the family but there is no way i let a young child (4/6 yr old) ride them unsupervised like you can with the gypsy cobs they have hearts of gold they can be very forward going and ideal for Advanced rider or they can be very laid back for a complete beginner and this is the same horse!

ive seen cobs competing at 80km CR rides getting grade ones then the next day taking a 4yr old out for a lesson off the lead rain!

 

Name another breed who can be like this?

A cob can keep it pace up all day without a sweat, also mine was so loyal standing guard over me when I went into a coma and would not leave me, which I am told is unusual but not unknown. At the stables I now keep mine there was a small problem last evening and one of the owners goes and gives her version of events to the YO from who I get an earfull this morning, the problem is these people are believed to me it was so insignificant as horses are horses are horses, and if anyone has anything to say say it to me not behind my back, but perhaps I frighten them I do hope so now as will just wait for them to do something even if it takes months, this is why I loved keeping my horse at home, but even then new neighbours reported me to the Council Animal Welfare team and I had these people down telling me how to look after a horse even after doing so for 22 years, it went like when they walked behind"does she kick?" I thought where is that ticklish spot now I be the woman could clear the stable roof, then have I not heard of hay nets as I was feeding off the floor, then when was the last time you had the vet my answer was the Mon of the same week, after I set my vet on to them. But what was lovely these new people took in dogs to look after and left them to bark and howl all day while they were out at work so as the animals were suffering as well as our ears it got stopped as I did my duty for these poor dogs.

Teehee I LOVE your reply about how high she must have been jumping at 6 - genius!!!!

Ignore people, they like to put others down to make themselves feel better. I tell you what, you'll be a damn site better than half of those with their 'fancy' expensive ponies who do the job for them while they sit like a sack of spuds and learn nothing in the process. Sad really!

I have read your post with interest and some trepidation!

My daughter has a pony which I am in the process of backing and ws hoping that she would be involved in pony club etc.  But am a bit aprehensive now as the pony is a Welsh sec A X cob and has loads of feather even though he is only 12.2hh.

If this is the type of attitude out there to young riders I don't think I want her involved in pony club at all.

His jumping hasn't started yet bu he did clear a 3ft electric fence last week!

I have made a decision which I don't want to do but for my sanity and my horses and will make this announcement when more info available to the yard as all the back biting and the snide comments I can do without, horses are great not all their owners are.
