Grr! Why do people turn so bitchy sometimes?

Ok Penny is a big 15hh. cob that when she has her full feathers looks like she should be pulling a wagon. But she a has a great jump on her(shes 18 and still enjoys jumping overa meter)

But the other day we were at a pony club showjumping training rally and before we went in I heard some people saying stuff like"Why the hell did she turn up on that thing?" and " Shes cracked to think she'll get anything done with a carthorse like that" and " Why's a carthorse at pony club?" too quote a few. And this was coming from the MOTHERS AND FATHERS!. We ahdto warm up on our own as the instructor was dealing with 2 very nervous riders with mad ponies. All the kids of them were jeering at me (they had little sportponies that were so hot and fast) and their ponies were husling Penny. She was so good and didn't do anything but I told some of the riders that if they came near me again I would use me whip on them!(not messing I have a very bad temper)

But I jumped the highest in the class, half the little "real jumpers" either messed up the course or bucked their little terrors of riders off. But as I came out of the arena one othe mothers came up to me and said(I am quoting here) "That's a lovely 5 year old you have there. It's a pity its a cob though. I've come across many in my time and once they turn 6 their jumping skill just keeps going downhill by about 10cms per year!"

In reply I said "Really?! Wow! I never knew that. Pennys like 18 so if it goes down 10 cms per year she must have been jumping about 2.20meters when she was 6! That interesting to know. Thanks"

You should have seen her face. My friends and favourite riding instructor were listening and they just couldn't stop laughing!

But why are some people just so bitchy?! I know not all people are like this but some people like this just give pony club a bad name for being bitchy. Like I am 14, why say these things to me about my pony which I have a great bond with which everybody says is totally clear. But she was about 40? WHY?!

Try not to let this sort of thing affect your enjoyment you and your pony have, he sounds lovely.  As to why people are like this, you'll most probably never know, but one thing for sure it's got nothing to do with you.  It's their problem that they have with whatever it is and they take it out on others.  Rise above it, it's their failing not yours.  Hope that helps a bit. x

Yes thanks. I do try to rise above it but who can stand by while every body has a go at your horse just be cause it isn't a sport pony.

I left pony club after one visit cos of the nastiness I overhead over my heavy cob - exact same attitude

-couldn't believe it - even worse was them walking away when we approached to make friends - so I just potter around on my own unfortunately but that's what life throws at us - upsets me sometimes when I think of it - I was 45 years old at the time with my first ever horse and totally new to horses - was just wanting some horsey friends - that was 7 years ago and I've still no confidence to go anywhere - would so loved to do LeTrec before me or the horse pegs out

It must be difficult I know.  Put some ear muffs on .  If you've got somebody/your friends with you stick with and chat with them, and distance yourself a bit from others that say nasty things.  If it really is very horrible, I would ask an instructor or adult to have a chat with these people to ask them to show a little more respect.

Ya I forgot to say that my dad went over and ate the head off them for "trying to crush the dreams of a little girl!" LOL I got my temper from him anyway! All they said was theat they were just telling me straight that I might aswell give up hope of a jumping carrer as long as I had Penny.

I'm glad im not the only one that has this happen to them though it's horrible and made worst by the fatc this was said by a 40 year old lady who has "been in the business" for 30 odd years.

And I think I will pick up some ear muffs SuzyA. Can you recommend any good brands? Luckily these people don't turn up to the rallies much as "they don't find the instuctors up to standerd anymore. They only came to this one as it was run by a famous rider(famous round here where I am in Ireland anyway) So I don't have to put up with them much anyway.

People have this image of a cob pulling a cart, and just can't get it out of their head, when in fact a cob can turn its hoof to pretty much anything, and as they're so intelligent they pick things up really easily as well.

You can tell I love cobs, can't you haha ??

I've had my old girl, an Irish cob, for something like 12 years now, and she's my horse of a lifetime - ok, not so hot at dressage, but she was an amazing jumper (retired now) and had a turn of speed that would leave a lot of others behind if we were out hacking together and had a gallop over a field.

And the pony club thing - sounds like the well known "pony club mother" to me - I think they've spent such a lot of money on their little darlings well bred pony, they're terrified that some other child on a common cob will come along and show them all up, which of course very often happens!!

I know it's difficult to ignore them, but whatever you do, please carry on enjoying being with your pony, it sounds like you get on really well together :o)

Yes and the fact Penny backs up that image pretty well doesn't help! Honesly i think she was bred to pull a gypsey wagon she lookls like those tradition ones that sometimes are in the parades round here. All feathers flying and huge manes. Yes I heard her say to someone that the pony was new and cost a nice tidy sum of 3,500. We are in a ressesion love? Penny is on free loan. I love showing people like that up though. I'm sort of evil like that..........

they are just jealous hunny and the parents can be the worst , sometimes buying expensive ponies for their daughters to ride for the parents status symbol . you cob sounds wonderful . actually witnessed one mother screaming at her child to get on the bl....dy new pony and wack it and jump it , the child stood crying tears dripping from her cheeks in a large popular indoor arena . didnt know wether to call rspca or rspcc lol (only joking). what was more bizzar , we only went to watch a friend jump and while this lady was screaming at child n dragging pony around it was only me and my family who were horrified at this bullying behavior. not any other on looker was remotely bothered about this scene , which makes me think they must see this behavior alot and it is acceptable to them !!!!. enjoy your cob . i have afriend who show jumps all her cobs , others hate her as she always wins hahaha x

Re: Grr! Why do people turn so bitchy sometimes?

When I first bought Tonka a Piebald Gypsy Cob from the riding school which was closing, the nasty remarks I got like, " you must not complain as it will be ashame if you have not Tonka asked why they thought no one would buy a Gypsy Cob and as I would talk to others not just Full Livery Owners so thought had him on loan, then another "never mind you can get a better horse in 12 months" then the famous or infamous problem brought on by a new girl working at the yard putting all horses out together geldings and mares and the one TB mare owner complained that my "Horrible Piebald Cob" had molested her mare plus another 12 mares could not stop laughing. What is even funnier is the one owner who was nasty about Tonka a few years later bought a Tonka and said what a horse did not know what she had been missing all these years. Then people went all funny on me because I took a rescue ex-racehorse on a 17.2h Chestnut Mare with what do you want with a horse like that at your age (60 at the time). Now have a Belgian Warmblood Mare and have nasty comments about Mares and she is too much for me and I want a plod a good Cob. This comment amused as Tonka my old Cob looked a plod but could go from stand to gallop, clocked doing 36 mph, and his trot was most other horses canter, his jumping not good but once frightened the life out of me jumped 7ft from stand, was good at dressage could do it after watching better at it than his owner, understood word commands. Another nasty was aked where I went on holiday and when I said Porlock, Somerset, the one person said did not like it down there as it was them and us and you did not talk to anyone unless they spoke to you first as it was very much Lord's of the Manor, could not help myself when I said I did not have any problems as my Great Great Grandfather was Lord of the Manor at Pluckly in Kent you should have seen there faces, one of my friends said they could tell what I was saying was the truth the answer was yes and they had gone bankrupt with the south sea bubble. I cannot help also winding some of these characters up and will take the you know what.

This sort of behaviour really annoys me ! Why are some people just so small minded and stupid !! Your cob sounds absolutely lovely, if they have'nt got anything positive to say then they should keep their thoughts to themselves. I actually think jealousy plays a big part in all of this and a lack of confidence on their part. There is nothing worse than a spolit little brat, I just feel sorry for their ponies !!
