How to change lead leg in a canter??

Hello

I am new to Your Horse,  I'm nearly 12 and I have been riding for 4 years now and I need help...

While I am cantering, sometimes my horse doesn't canter on the right lead leg.  I always have to go back into a trot then back into a canter.  I find it annoying.  People tell me there is a different way to change leg while cantering, but they never know how.

Would anyone know how to?

Thank you :)

To change leg lead in canter you would need to perform a flying change, by altering your weight in the saddle to the side you wish to lead from and by repositioning your leg i.e. normally your inside leg would be on the girth and your outside leg a little behind it so you would need to swap these positions round and give the canter aid, but remember to position your weight properly in the stirrup as well.  To get the correct lead from the outset you might just need to practice your positon and aids.

I think you need to work on correct leg in canter before attempting flying changes.  Does the horse do this with other riders as some horses have a preferred leg on one rein and are prone to striking off on the wrong lead leg?

How do you ask for canter as maybe your aids are causing this?  What does your instructor say?
