Who weighs their horses hay and feed ?

I have never weighed any of my feed for Tenor as the poor chap is usually overweight ! So it's normally a handfull of Safe & Sound with Baileys Lo-Cal. I am thinking about weighing Tilly's feed though just to make sure she's getting the correct amount. I weigh taped her the other day but this is'nt reputed to be very accurate so if anyone knows a more accurate method apart from a weight bridge that would be great.

If anyone needs to work out how much forage and how much concentrate to feed their horse have a look at Bailey's Horse Feeds web-site, you can enter your horses weight / condition and work load and it will work it all out for you.

I don't weigh my mare's food but I weigh her hay. And you can measure her weight with the tape, yes they are not the most accurate, usually under the correct weight but you can see how much your horse gains or loses with the tape :)

i have some scales to weigh feed, which i found useful, as different scoops fit different amounts, and makes it more accurate when you are feeding. if i switch to a new feed i just work out how much they need and weigh it once so i know how much to fill the scoop.

i agree that weight tapes arent great- according to mine my 2 are almost exactly the same weight- but he is a slight 15'2 tb, but with a wide barrel as he has a big rib cage, and she is a 16'2, more of a hunter build- deffinatly heavier.

i tend to just do a sort of condition score- i can see if they have lost or gained by having a look and feel across their body. only rougthly, but if you take it in you do notice changes.

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

here is a measurement thing you can do to work out your horses approximate weight.

http://www.localriding.com/how-to-measure-a-horse.html

I don't weigh my horses feed or hay. They get roughly the same amount every night and if they are looking fat or thin then i adjust their feed and hay accordingly. I use a jug for there feed so they get the same amount of feed as i go to a mark on it, hay i just see if feels about heavy enough.

I don't weigh my hay or feed but only me or my partner feed them so we know exactly how much they get and before they got the feed they are on now we calculated how much to feed them both as they are on different feeds (Archie gets dodson and horell build and glow and Gucci gets baileys pasture mix, but they both get the same chaff) and with the hay they get a full haynet at night if they are staying in.

As you know my lot are all fatties, I don't weigh their hay, they just get their nets full so they always have something to munch on.  They get a handfull of basic mix each when they come in at night and again in the morning, it doesn't even cover the bottom of their feed bowls.  To be fair i can still feel Rhodri's ribs, but Tommy doesn't have ribs never has done, I think they possibly aren't even there lol

tommytank - i no what u mean about no ribs, i didnt think flick even had any until last year!

Hay i judge by eye, they get enough to last them the night as i'd hate them not to have something to munch on, treacle has his soaked for his weight and copd, which i will start with flick soon too..

i tend to feed in accordance to what flicks done, work wise. Usually she'll have half meadowblend mix and 1 hi fi lite (1 scoop = 300g) i also go on how she is looking and feeling.. through the winter she has more as tends to drop condition. Treacle was getting a scoop (once soaked) readymash but now looking much better to changing slowly back to hifi and low calorie nuts.. flick is also coming off mix onto the same nuts.. however i think they seem to be making her a bit silly?

The only thing I did was weigh the feed at first to know how much the scoops I use (1 litre plastic Jug from Tesco 0.38p) the chaff I don't weigh or the hay as I do the hay ad lib. otherwise you get vices develop.

I don't weigh anything any more!  I used too but got to the point that as the hay is soaked for 12 hours there are no nutrients so ZZ gets ad-lib hay anyway. Anya I just stuff nets as full as possible and she will only ever graze them - whatever they leave Welshie gets, if it doesn't "feel" enough she will get a little more!

Hard feed, since I changed over to Simple Systems they do a buck-kit which has loads of scoops of various sizes, it also has a chart telling you how much which feed weighs with which scoop - so I use this as a guide - everything apart from the chaff is in that respect weighed out for each horse - takes longer to mix feeds but you get used to "1 x red Total eclipse - 1 x blue Grass Nuts" etc.

I've never weighed out hay, and as they're out at night as well, just put out however many nets I think they need.

Bracken and Monty both get feeds, and that's all worked out properly, Monty only gets a very small amount of hifi so he can have his meds.

He has actually lost a bit of weight, so he's now pretty much what he should be, Bracken has kept her weight on over the winter with being fed up with speedibeet and senior condition mix, which is now being reduced and finished for the summer now the grass is growing, Fate and Captain still look a good weight without having any feed at all, and Fate has somehow managed to put weight on a little, goodness knows how.
