Gaining weight and muscle

My boy currently looks a bit like an RSPCA case... He lost condition over winter and now he can't seem to gain weight, i first started trying about January time, i saw his ribs start to poke through, so i gave him more hay and a bit more chaff in his tea. Didnt work. So i then put him on Baileys top line conditioning cubes, and they have worked in a way. He has a big belly, but his ribs are still showing. I have been giving him breakfast for the past two weeks, but to be honest all its done is diminish my food supplies. He has been wormed too. Any one got any ideas what i can do? Am i just worrying over nothing?

PS, i cant feed him anything that might fizz him up.

Thanks x

Re: Gaining weight and muscle

Hi, I have been having the same problem with my tb who is usually a very good doer, he has a lot of muscle so I could understand that he needs a lot to eat, but he too dropped off rather worryingly even though he was on calm and condition. I had the vet out and blood samples were taken, his liver enzymes were slightly high but nothing can be explained from this, I think he has had a virus as he has also been a bit quiet recently, I have put him on these Baileys cubes, and they seem to be working for him, and I have given him 3 weeks off of any work to allow him to use all of the calories possible to build back up instead of burning it as energy.  I wish i could suggest something, my vet said there has been a lot of cases like this recently, maybe because of the strange winter we've had. I do hope your boy gets to a nice healthy weight soon, it's horrible isn't it when you are chucking a vast amount of food down their neck only for them to drop off. Not what we want at the start of the showing season!

xx RIP Fenny- You gave me so much happiness and so many great memories xx

It is a pain. He doesnt seem quiet though, in fact the opposite. He isnt hungry either, doesnt rush to his hay when i bring him in and he waits patiently for his tea. It might be a case of just building his muscle up again as he has no top line. I just want to move the weight from his belly to over his ribs, i'm always worried people think i'm starving him!

Maybe spring grass will help :)

Hmmm well he must feel fine in himself then so that's one less thing to worry about, I suppose it's like with people, we always gain weight where we don't want it and never put it on where we do! :L Hope he's looking better soon, please let me know :) My boy is still looking a bit ribby but he has started to put on some weight over the top of them now. I guess it's just trial and error to see what put the weight onto your boy.

 Hey Annabelleh26,

There's a super recipe for putting weight on horses.

Start giving him a mix of 2 large scoops of beetpulp and one of alpha A, twice a day, mixed with warm water and some soya oil, so it feels up one of those big bukets.

You'll see some change in him in around 3 weeks, and they absolutly love it!

Mr horse is a a fairly fit 18 year old arab cross welsh . He has fat pads behind his saddle, no poverty lines on his rump and a bit of a crest on his neck. However you can see his ribs quite clearly. He is on conditioning cubes and has just come off blue chip. Any ideas how I can get his ribs covered?

I seem to be having this problem with my two year old (where the weight has dropped off all of a sudden)-he went from being rather pot-bellied, fattish, no ribs showing to fairly ribby at the moment....increased his feed but now increasing it again. Have only had him just over a month tho, so tomorrow I'm going to see if I can arrange for someone to come check his teeth to see if that may be an issue.

He is an Arabx too btw flossie-and like yours it seems to go all on his tummy, but I think that's the norm with Arabs as far as I've been able to tell.
