Shoeless

 Hi guys,

Noticed Tommy was missing his front shoe today. It has come clean off and farrier coming thursday hopefully. Just wondering if its still ok to ride and if so whether 30 min ride in walk would be okay most of the days?

Re: Shoeless

if he walks okay in hand then go for it. However if he is favouring that leg, then don't.

Re: Shoeless

It really depends on the horse and if they can cope without it as the foot isn't used to not having a metal shoe on it. Would you be in a sand school or hacking out? In a sand school it should be fine as the foot sinks into the ground.

This is one of the reasons i keep my horses barefoot, i don't have to worry about lost shoes.

Re: Shoeless

I never used to ride with a shoe missing but then i watch my horse buck rear gallop in field unhindered so now i do light work just have friend on the ground to check if he looks ok. Saying that if you only wnat to do work aslong as its not on hard ground i cant see a problem. I remebr seeing mary king finish a cross country course last year having lost a shoe in a water jump horse finished sound so i think its more about knowing your horse then actually beng a right or wrong answer

It would be on the road so i will just take it easy with him and see how he is. I was more thinking about the unbalance?

I personally wouldn't ride on the road partly coz he will be out of balance and I would feel wierd walking with one shoe on and one shoe off and partly coz if he is used to wearing shoes he is likely to get footsore on hard ground. If you can ride in the field or sand school he should be fine.

I wouldn't take him on the road as he will get sore and probably wear his foot.

Re: Shoeless

i can ride my girl on the grass when she has lost a shoe but not on the road as will wear down the hoof quickly and could make them sore. from a balence point of view im surprised how little difference it seems to make: i had a lesson in the field and she went brilliantly, even doing tight cirles and leg yielding, with her front left missing.

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!
