So worried about College

So, as most of you know i'm starting college in September,

I am seriously nervous, i'm actually scared.

I have had my confidence knocked so many times, so i'm rather nervy, and i bet the girls/boys going will be amazing, and a better rider than me, and i will end up embarrassing myself. Also, i have a fear of jumping which i am trying to overcome, also galloping frightens me, I'm worried that they will be able to do these things without a fear.

At the time of taking the course, i was all up for it because i didn't really think about this.. i really should've!

I really don't know what to do, the thought scares me so much!

Sorry for all this!

Its an experience and every experience is a good one as long as no one gets hurt. Try it and see how it goes, you can always get moral support here and, who cares if they are better than you, its just some fun and its an experience

There's probably lots of others feeling exactly the same way. Try it and see how you get on and remember...

It will be allright in the end, if it's not allright, it's not the end.

Wow what course are you doing?!  I just read in one of your previous posts that you are going to an equine college :O!  You are so lucky!  I would love to do something like that.

Remember, this is something you have chosen to do for YOU.  This is your opportunity and you're taking it!  Don't worry about what other people may be (and probably are not :P) thinking.  Make the most of it!

I'm sure you will make plenty of friends who will want to encourage and support you.  You're likely not the only one feeling like this.  I don't think many people go into a completely new situation feeling 100% confident.  Remember they are all in the same boat as you and everyone has their insecurities.

Also, it's likely that people will have differing levels of abilities and everyone excels at different things.  There are things you will find easy that others won't and vice versa.

Hope this helps :).

As all the others have said, nearly everyone who is starting with you will be feeling the same as you - nervous and excited at the same time.

They're not all going to be super confident and brilliant in all respects, they're ordinary human beings with failings and fears, just like you.

And surely the idea of doing a course like that is to learn - to improve things that you're not good at, and to have the confidence and ability to say,  look, I'm rubbish at this, but I'm willing to learn how to get better.

And there will also be things that you're good at that you may not realise, and they will help boost your confidence for the other things.

I'm sure you'll be nervous to start with, but after a week or so it'll seem like you've been there for ever and you'll have a great time :o)

Re: So worried about College

Oh bless you, you'll be fine as everyone has said above, and I wonder how many of the otehrs that are about to attend are posting on other forums saying the same?  There is absolutely no shame in being no good at something, that is the absolute point of going into a situation to learn to improve.  See it as just like the first day you started school or the first time you rode - you didn't know how too, if you would like it etc etc.  Life is full of lessons and ups and downs, what makes anyone a better person is to learn from them - you will be fine.

I have been around horses for 45 years and am still learning, still making mistakes and still totally rubbish at certain things - and apart from one horse I have never been brave enough to gallop on any horse apart from her - so you are not alone.

A few years back a friend took me to a Paso Fino yard and had entered me in for a lesson with one of the top trainers - the 3 hours car journey I felt sick and smoked about 20 cigarettes, I got there and was physically shaking - when I put my foot in the stirrup of was nearly sick - I hadn't ridden for 8 years, never been on a Paso Fino and icingo n the cake in the stands around the school were loads of spectators!  After the first few minutes were over and I hadn't fallen off, the horse hadn't reared, bucked or gone mental - I actually had a great time and ended up trotting and cantering around the school as well as trotting up and down the wooden sheets they use to emphasise the paso paces.  So you will be fine, take lots of deep breaths and ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE.

Everyone will be just as scared as you, the difference maybe between you and others is a lot of peple wont admit their fears, for fear of being ridiculed and so you may think everyone else is better than you or more confident. But this just isnt true, you really are all there to learn, there may even be people who have done very little riding at all and are seriously wishing they could back out. You are going to have a seriously good time, the first few weeks will be a little fraught, whilst you find your position within the group, but dont worry where you are within the group, someone has to be best and someone has to be the worst rider, just be the one who is determined to enjoy her time and learn all she can.

Re: So worried about College

As said above everybody will be nervous and anyone who says their not is lying. I would try telling your instructor that your pretty nervous and would it be possible to go on the quieter horses until you get some more confidence. You'll be suprised at how much it helps for your instuctor to know your nervous. Best of luck with it!

It's ok if you give up as long as you come back later to try again.
