how far would you travel?

I've got the chance to rent a fantastic field with really nice routes to hack out and it would be much cheaper than where I am at livery.  But, it's 35 mins drive away, which would obviously use petrol, but also, do other people have their horses that far away, as I'm not sure if it's too far for an emergency etc. if I had to get there quickly, or that I won't be around just to drive past the field and have a quick check throughout the day.  I'd love other people's opinion?

I would because ok it would use fuel but if it is cheaper then at your livery but If you only have one horse then he might get lonley. If you ride every day then keep him where he is. When I was in england are horses where 25 mins away but it was worth it cause there was a school and beautiful tracks! But it is yopur choise

Re: how far would you travel?

well i used to drive 20 miles to my old place! but i lived in west london so needed to drive quite a way to get to a proper bit of grazing. i would recomend working out the miles and petrol use, as it is expensive and all adds up. also i was at a yard with quite a few other poeple who could phone me if there was a problem and help untill i got there- depends if you are going to share the grazing

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

Re: how far would you travel?

Ive always had my horses at home but for one summer i had them at dads workplace about 20mins away, the good thing was that he drove past everyday and then i would be there a few times for a ride or at the weekend for a check. But it still drove me mad not being able to just pop out and see them without it being a big hassle of a drive etc

Re: how far would you travel?

At the moment my horse is about 15mins drive away, but its a private yard and the YO is there most of the time so if i cant get there (if i'm held up at work etc) then shes more than happy to help me out. The distance is something to think about, especially in terms of petrol/diesel but sometimes you need to go a bit further out to get the facilities you need. Knowing that he is in a great place and that the YO sees him as one of her own, means that this is the best solution for me, no matter how long it takes me to get there.

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.

Re: how far would you travel?

I've always had my horses within 5 - 10 minutes drive away, firstly at a rented field, now in our own field, and I know it would be strange to me to have to go any further to see them.

But as pippixox says, work out how much more you'll spend in petrol if you move, perhaps even make up a pros and cons chart.....

But good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: how far would you travel?

Depends on how much I'd save in livery, how much more I'd be spending on petrol, how close current yard was and how far from ideal current yard was. If I was happy at my current yard and it was close (ie 5-10 mins away) then no I don't think I would. If my current situation was not ideal and the increase in distance wasn't actually that great (eg already 20 mins away) then yes I'd consider it

It really depends on the yard. For instance if you didnt have the car for a couple of days or it was to snowy to drive up is there people up there to help out? We are quite far away from the field at the moment and are now thinking of moving closer to home but that is partly due to the price aswell! Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Personally i would'nt travel very far atall, I don't drive so if my OH can't get to the yard I can always cycle. Even if I could drive I would'nt want to travel more than 3 or 4 miles to a yard, I'm actually trying to think of ways to keep our neddies alot closer to us, we need a small cottage and lots of land lol !

We had ours 30mins away for a while - only 10 miles but through a town.  It was fine during the summer but a nightmare during the winter for me.  We're now 5 miles and 15 mins away which is much more manageable & the people and the hacking are worth it!!  Boys are 5 mins away which is better still but no hacking there!

Depends on if the savings in livery costs balance out the petrol costs (if you know what I mean ?!!) ...

I travel about 30 mins to my horses but I'm not DIY so only need to be there once a day about 5 or 6 days a week, if you're doing over an hour round trip twice a day this may become a bit of a hassle for you ?!!
