Some of you may have read my recent post about Monty being sore again due to a crack on his offside front from having separarted hoof walls.

Well my farrier has been today, and cut away what was left of the crack, as when he started to investigate he discovered a lot of black nasty stuff in there - necrotic tissue - which has now all gone, but it does mean poor Monty has a sort of cave at the front now where hoof should be.

I emailed this photo to the vets, and I'm told I'll have to scrub it out every day and spray antiseptic in it, and just keep my fingers crossed everything carries on ok.

Did wonder if he ought to be in on box rest, but apparently he should be fine out, as long as he carries on with the danilon, so I'll just have to see how it all goes.

When Sammy had an abscess like that I tubbed it 3 times a day with epsom salts and then syringed hydrogen peroxide onto it.  I put an easiboot over it to keep dirt out and he was allowed out with that on.

Wishing Monty well very soon, lets hope that the hoof wall grows down nice and strong now that the farrier has cleaned it out, good luck with treating him, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for him. At least he has'nt got to stay in on his own. Let us know how he gets on, best wishes, Lyn XX

have you thought about  a hoof boot to turn him out in?

I would use a hoof boot to stop it getting caked in mud once this cold spell is cleared. Hope he has a quick recovery from it. Hopefully another couple of trims and it will be just about grown out.

Awww, thanks for all the good wishes, guys - I did actually put him in last night, and he'll stay in until the ground gets a bit softer, which hopefully should be tomorrow.

Rhapsody - my vet said not to tub it, as the water would soften the hoof and he wants it to be as hard as poss, the antiseptic spray helps to dry everything up and really penetrates into all areas so that's why I have to carry on with that.

And yes, I have a hoof boot all ready and waiting for when the frost goes.

poor boy =( if you go on applied equine pediotry website, they have some fantastic stuff for hoof problems, think it'd be silvtrasol for something like his, its the best antiseptic ive used n it doesn't harm the living tissue like hydrogen peroxide can. hopefuly he'll recover quikly and itll grow out.
