Wow scary stuff on this thread! I love Kevin's posts. No one knows everything.

I have been riding 30 years but still consider myself a novice. I am a happy hacker with a horse that lives out and eats grass, hay, and fibre based nuts. I know NOTHING about hayledge, most hard feed types, dressage, showing, livery yards +++ many other topics. BUT I enjoy reading the comments and considering the opinions of others.

IMO there are no silly questions except those you dont ask. Most of my posts are a bit trite, and probably silly to many of you. That doesn't mean I don't need someone to ask though and I feel that this forum is a great base for that.  It's also nice to have somewhere to share not only worries but also little triumphs too.

Better to log on and find a topic that you think is a bit basic than no new threads at all. Bring on the chat!

 Hmm would be a bit odd about the smell. Our halyage usually smells like bananas, beer or is sometimes vinegary smelling. But white mould is normal, its when its blackish mould you should take it off. Got to say I love the big bales, especially on really cold days and the bale is warm in the middle! Ahh!

I use small bale haylage (Horsehage and Silvermoor) as one of my horses is prone to colic.   They smell really sweet.   Some of the girls at my last yard used to use big bale stuff and the smells ranged from vinegary to cheesy.  the horses especially loved the cheesy one!

If it smells like sewage to the point it makes people boke, I would tend not to use it.   I also would not use the heated stuff from the middle.   White or creamy mould is OK in small quantities as it is usually just yeast growing on the sugars in the haylage.   Blue, green or black moulds might be harmful and should be avoided.

A reputable supplier should replace the bale if he/she is shown a sample.

Some of the nastier reponses to what sounded like an innocent question certainly would make me think twice before posting a query.   With horses, you cannot know too much, and forums like this one allow people to learn from the experiences of others before deciding what is best for them and their horse.  Yes, lots of people on here have maybe seen the question before, but new people are joining all the time.   Some tolerance, please?

I also think that we should be civil to one and other, jeeezzz it makes me want to not bother at all with this forum any more and I love to know how everyones getting on.  If you don't like someones post cant you just ignore it, why do people feel the need to throw insults at each other.
