I am so fed up with people judging me about my horse, they really need to learn the facts before casting assumptions.  I was asked why my mare spends most of her time in and I said she has laminitis at the moment - the looks said it all but then came the  "oh over fed horse then?"

For god sake laminitis is not always about an over fed horse and I wish people would know all the facts before passing judgement - my mare has Cushing's Disease and secondary to that EMS so yeah she has fat pads and in places she shouldn't yet if you remove her rug she is as ribby as a starved horse. She has bouts of laminitis for no apparent reason can just be change in temperature and then ends up back on box rest until she is sound enough to go out again. Her life evolves around weather conditions, ground conditions, grass conditions  - but this little mare loves to be in and have everything she needs brought to her and has a happy life - you only have to look at her to know she's happy!

She isn't neglected because she is on box rest and she isn't a neglect case because she has laminitis she has a disease and in fact she is probably better treated than a lot of horses. She has regular small feeds starting at 6am finishing with over night nets at 10pm, company, warmth, shelter, water and amusement in the way of toys, mirrors and watching what is going on around her.  My life evolves around her feeds and medications and will continue to do so until she has had enough and is no longer well enough to continue.

So to all those people I have met over the last 2 years stop judging me neither me or my mare asked for her to have Cushings and all the associated problems but it is the card life has dealt us and we work as a team alongside the farrier and the Vet and I am not a bad owner because of it.  I would give up my life in an instant if someone said she could live her life out at grass and never have to worry about being ill or medications and she could be healthy.

RANT over!

Always good to get things like that off your chest!   Really feel for you as I dont understand why people feel the need to comment when they dont understand the whole situation of just plain dont understand a condition. The main thing is you know your girls happy and your doing the best by her so good for you!

I'm glad you've got it off your chest, even if not to the people who are judging you......yes, I know what you mean, we too have had a Cushings horse who was sadly pts last Feb, and yes, some people make you feel as though you didn't ought to be owning a horse, and that they're very nearly about to report you to the RSPCA or whatever.

You'd think that as 95% (think that's right) of laminitis these days is Cushings related they'd be a bit more considerate, but as you say, they've got it into their little noddles that you're an overindulgent owner.

I do feel for you, but take heart, I know your girls get looked after with 5* treatment !!

It's really hard isn't it, plus the problem we're now facing is that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and that means people have been educated to believe that if they eat "too much" sugar they will be diabetic, (this is an unproven theory which the medical profession are currently back tracking on so fast they're in danger of tripping themselves up!), so they think diabetes=laminitis, the horse is being overfed! People love to judge and they think that because they have a "normal" horse that its because of the way they treat it, wrong its just luck!

Don't let some people who really don't know what they're talking about get you down. Enjoy your horse and try to not let their comments get to you (I know it's hard ... I've been judged on a number of occasions for supposedly never being at the yard to ride ... I'm there at either 8am or 8pm because of a work schedule so never see anyone ...)

 

People are ignorant but that's not your problem, so long as you know that what you're doing is the right thing which I'm sure it is then chin up and ignore them.

i agree, far too many people jump to conclusions. for the first time ever at 13 years, last summer my boys showed signs of laminitus: he is a skinny thourougbred who i spend alot of time trying to bulk up! but an excessivly sunny week in september had upped the sugar content in the grass and given him laminitic symptoms.

sounds like you do a great job looking after your horse, cushings looks like very hard work

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

I agree, people need to stop being judgemental.  Would it help at all if you put up a notice outside your horses stable explaining why she's kept in alot?  Might shut them up and stop those "looks".

How frustrating for you..Laminitus is a awful disease and from horses i've known its turned out that laminitus is nearly always been a secondry issue. I'd say hold your head high! There are not many people around who know exactly what their horse needs like you do with your mare.. If only people wouldn't judge so quick but unfortunatley they do.. so turn a blind eye only you know your horse and no horse is ever the same!

Unfortunately I know all about this problem as have had 2 horses with Cushings and Laminitis, and what don't help matters when some idiot on a forum suggested all owners with horses that have Laminitis should be prosecuted. OK overfeeding is one but there is many other causes which includes frosted grass, and cushings etc. Some people have closed minds unfortunately which you cannot afford to have in anything you do and especially with horses, horses are like us an individual with feelings and health problems eccept they cannot talk to you or do they as when you get close to your horse the gut feeling takes over telling you something wrong.

I understand how you must be feeling, it 's just so annoying when you are doing everything that you can for your horse. It really bugs me when some people just think laminitis is down to bad management, I really have to be careful with Tenor as he's usually over weight and such a good doer, Laminitis can strike any horse or pony at any time and tbh I worry for Tenor although I do everything I can to avoid it. I think that the problem with many people is lack of knowledge and ignorance, they don't understand the illness or how to manage it !

unfortunatley its always the ones with no idea or no understanding who judge and have a go, somtimes its good to rant and it get it off your chest :o) Some people will always judge and shove their oppionions in where they are not needed to try and ignore their own 'issues' x
