Re: Heated debate!

No, I can't see a problem - the people we share our field with have a pony that's too small for the children now, and another family with 2 little boys come up and sometimes groom and ride him, sometimes they just come up to make a fuss of him. They do poo picking, fill up water buckets, and any odd things that may need doing.

The owners are pleased that the pony still gets ridden, the other family are keen for the boys to learn ALL about pony care, not just the riding, and they wouldn't get that at a riding stables.

It makes a lot of sense, and makes two families happy, so where's the problem?

Re: Heated debate!

I agree with everyone on here.  I think this lady was annoyed as she gets paid to groom horses and someone was asking for someone to do it for free but what was interesting was that no one agreed with her and she was sounding very self centred and money orientated.

I am glad that everyone on here feels the same.  The horsey world can be quite bitchy but the majority and kind and generous and these are the people that think about their horses first before money.

Re: Heated debate!

If everyone is aware that there is no money involved and happy with this arrangement I don't see what the problem is !!!

Some people can't afford their own horse and would love the oppurtunity to be around horses and ride for free ... I think what this woman was offering was a good chance for someone without the money to be involved in horses. The only reason the freelance groom was sore about it was because she would see it as losing money I suppose !!!

It's not anyone's business really, if the woman wanted to offer someone the chance to ride and care for her horse through the week and someone is happy to do this for free then  this arrangement had got nothing to do with anyone else !!!

Re: Heated debate!

I saw this on facebook the other day too!

I think its a very fair offer as in exchange for the jobs gettting done the person gets a ride in return. Also its the womans decision on what offer she makes for her horse and its not like a loan agreement anyway. Thought it was quite a nice idea really :)

Things on fb always get blown out of proportion aha

Re: Heated debate!

Seems a fair solution to me.  Maybe the professional groom felt done out of a job...but that's not the case I'm guessing.  I'd guess that many people who offer rides in exchange for yard duties are doing so to benefit their horse but perhaps also because they couldn't afford to pay for full livery (or a paid groom) anyway... I always worked for rides when I was a teenager... I worked alongside paid grooms at a polo yard & mucked out cow shed (yuck) at the farm where I had riding lessons.

I dont see it as a problem either. I worked for rides when i was younger, as im sure many many people did - it was just part and parcel of being a pony mad kid! I loved doing all the dirty work, as well as getting to ride! As others have said, im sure there are many people who are not in a position to have a horse of their own, but would value the opportunity just to be around them. Things dont always have to be about money, loads of people choose to spend time with horses just for the pure love it them. And it potentially means that the horse in question would have loads of love and attention from more than one person!

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.

Re: Heated debate!

When I was much younger I would have walked, and did actually walk, miles just to look at a horse and pat him, and I would have loved it if I could have got to actually spend proper quality time with one, the thought of being paid for it never entered my mind - I would have done it more than willingly and for free.

Re: Heated debate!

don't see the problem at all. obviously the woman just has a stick up her backside or a very boring night so thought she'd make it interesting for yourself.

it's a good thing for young teenagers to do who do want their own pony but can't afford it. it's very common in riding schools for kids to help out at the yard at the weekend in exchange for free riding and lessons.

as somebody already pointed out - there would be a difference though. there is a big difference between a professional groom and somebody just coming to exercise your horse. if i was paying somebody i'd be expecting them to be qualified, have experience and to be improving my horse in schooling, jumping or whatever problems he may have. whereas the person riding for free is just exercising the horse and riding for their own enjoyment, clearly a big difference.

some people don't realise that horses cost so much money so maybe this woman doesn't have the money to pay somebody. at least she's doing the right thing by getting someone to exercise her horses and not leave them without it.

heated debate

Would only pay a professional, qualified person to ride my horse and if they were working on a particular issue.  I was brought up that you worked in exchange for rides.  Nowadays it has got too money orientated.  I'm in the situation whereby the horse I own is now on part-livery and I have a colleague just exercising him for me, plus doing jumping and using him for lessons etc, currently they don't pay anything, but my last month's livery bill was more than my mortgage (as have been recovering from an op) and have now asked if they can make a weekly contribution, in a nutshell they just turn up and ride, no payment for shoes, insurance, vets bills, no stable chores to do, no tack cleaning etc.  Before he used to be even tacked up in readiness.  Happy to hear what other people think?

Re: Heated debate!

I remember the days when horse lovers would lap up the chance to just be around some horses during the day if they couldn't afford their own. I have a little girl come up and make a fuss of my little welshie, she treats it as her own, loves cuddles, grooms and brings her polos, she never expects rides or money she just likes being with the horse.
