teething?

what age do horsesstart teething? and do they tend to want to bite and chew everthing?? romeo is 20months and he has always been a nibbley baby but atm he is litrally chewing on everything!! even his water bucket lol...

Also he has started biting alot more... not nastily it just seems like a habit.... if he hurts he gets a good telling off, but other wise evertime he nibbles me i just push his head away and try not to make too much fuss.... do you think he will grow out of it its sooo annoying lol!!

Re: teething?

Charlie used to bite alot when he had teeth coming through. If Romeo is 20 months old then he could be getting his front teeth coming through. Hope he calms down with the nibbling as it can get very annoying if they keep it up for a long time. To stop Charlie biting mei used to make him take a step back, Madz on here told me howshe stopped Joey from biting, and itworked really well. Have a try with that and see if it helps.

teething?

Hi,

Im having the same thing with my two year old at the moment.  He tries to grab his headcollar when you put it on, gets the lead rope in his mouth when you lead him and like yours tries to  nibble you.  I am using similar tactics pushing him away with a firm no and making him back up.  It has got worse since he went in with the herd after being gelded.  Not sure how much is teething and how much is wanting to play. He has now learnt he cant get at my upper body and has changed tactics and goes for my wellies instead - lol.  He is improving but you need eyes in back of your head with him.

Good Luck

Re: teething?

Never had a youngster, but it has got me thinking.  Like when dogs and children are teething, they have things they can play with and bite on to help them through their teething stage.  I wonder if horses need the same?

Re: teething?

Tilly chewed on everything and anything and that included us !! She only stopped a few months ago and she's around 4 1/2 lol. Maybe some of this was down to lack of training and bad manners we are not really sure. Thankfully she has calmed down quite a bit now.

Re: teething?

my aunties yearling (will be 2 in may) is deffo teething, he's got teething bumps under his jaw bbless him and is chewing EVERYTHING!!! even barb wire =/ (yes he is a bit simple) wouldn't be so bad if he had the slightest of manners but take the headcollar off n his brains seem to go with it, llol. think Spag may also be teething (its great fun at feed time in the field, both chewing headcollars, sleeves, boots) but he knows better to try and push his luck, he just mouths at you mostly, if he gets a finger by mistake he acts very sorry for himself and wont even nuzzle you for at least 10mins, haha. i found lemon or tabasco sauce works well to discourage biting

ride a gypsy vanner... it'll make your butt look smaller
