The story how you got your horse

I will start by telling mine. I was 11 and my parents promised to get to lessons for my birhday 1 year later. i finally did get to have a lesson.I fall in love with the place and I  contuined to go and ride every week. I was on this pony named Shiloh she was one of that last I rode. Most people didn't like her but I did but I knew it was met to be. She was a pony my trainer got for free and she had some prolems. I rode her the very next week but then I stopped riding her for a while but then I had this feeling that I should get back on her so I did and i realize that I love her so much. I knew she was the one, so I keep on riding her and now i have owned her for almost a year and a half and i I'm loving every bit it. I can't wait to hear your stories how you met your horse.

Some of these are lovely!

I'd just come back from traveling oz for a month and having worked with horses since i left school decided now was the time to find a horse. Had a limited budget of 2k so options were either youngster to bring on or older horse who been there done it. My instructor at the time had a friend who was exercising this 6yr old horse who was a late starter and was now for sale. Went and saw her def loved the look of her. Went back for second viewing to ride her when she bucked me off in the canter. She had never jumped so couldn't even tell what she'd be like! Anyway brought her just after christmas and I've now had her over 6 years! Would never sell her infact the plan is to put her in foal this year so her baby can be my next horse :)

Re: The story how you got your horse

Well I wont go into detail on all the horses I have had coz I'll bore you to detah but Coco I decided to get after a 12 year break from horses to get uni out of the way and my career sorted so I could afford a horse again! I told my mum I was getting another horse and she was 'Oh god your not are you? All that work and mud and winter weather and the money?!?!' The next day she called me and said 'Do you think if I put a bit  of money towards buying the horse I could have some input and maybe ride him out every so often!' She is as horse mad as me and although her practical side said no as soon as I planted the seed she had to be involved!

Anyway we started to look and the 1st horse I saw I loved, he was perfect for me and mum. I had other viewigns booked that weekend but none of them were a patch on him so I called and put in an offer. Unfortunately he failed the vetting so we had to pull out which broke mine and mum's hearts as we had decided he was going to be our boy and started imagining him coming home etc. We carried on looking and had so many disappointments with horses that weren't what they were advertised, horses in poor condition, the perfect horses that you called the instant the horse deals mag came out and were already sold, horses booked to view and then the phone call hto say they had sold them that morning and we were beginning to loose hope of ever finding our boy! We saw one who was not as advertised that morning and when we got home I looged onto the website and an ad had just been posted about Coco about 30 mins before! It got my attention immediately and I called mum in to see, she agreed and we called the number from my mobile. No answer sop left a message then tried them off my  mum and dad's home phone and left a message and then off my dad's mobile and left another message - we wanted that horse! She called us back and asked when we wanted to come and see him, we said now! She said how about tomorrow morning and we made her promise not to show him to anyone else that afternoon! That night my mum text me and said he was the one she could just feel it and I felt the same. The next day we got there an hour early coz we were so excited. I tried him out in the school and loved him, he was a little greener than I'd planned but all the basics were there of a fantastic nioce natured giant! I then hacked him back to the yard alone to spend a bit of time alone with him, we went past flapping black plastic - fine, we had 2 huge lorries pass us - fine, we went past a drive way with log stumps at the end of the drive and he snorted and had to cross the road to pass the evil stumps which made me laugh and I was sold - he was the horse for me, lovely, solid, safe and just a bit daft! I arranged the vetting whichhe passed and we picked him up the next day! I can still remember taking him home, it was a gorgeous sunny spring day and I couldn't believe I had such a gorgeous horse of my own and I was taking him home to be my boy! Best day of my life without a doubt!!!

Leo - I saw Leo advertised on the internet - no photo so didn't know what he looked like apart from being chestnut.  Went to see him and fell in love with his beautiful flaxen mane and tail - he was such a pretty boy!  Brought him home two days later and although he can be a bolshy little git, I love him to bits.

Berti - Daughter was looking for a horse and I happened to see that another forum member had put a post on here advertising her horse for sale.  My daughter also happened to see his advert on righthorses.co.uk and liked the look of him so it seem like fate that we should both have seen different adverts for him.  Went to see him and the rest is history!

Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway!

Re: The story how you got your horse

I actually met alpha a year before without knowing who she was.

A friend of mine had bred her horse and I went with her to the stud to go and meet the new addition. In the field where they were kept there was several other mares and their foals, and there was this particular big bay that followed me round the field and sniffing me.

A year later the foal was ready to come home, and after losing my previous horse to a sudden illness i was horseless and casually looking around. I got picked up from school by my parents and friend who said there was a mare for sale at the stud who we thought was in the field with Zara when she foaled a year before. We went and saw her and fell in love, my mum who was scared of horses walked straight  into her stable and Alpha stood there sucking her thumb.

Two weeks later the big bay that had followed me round the field a year before knowing and buying her arrived at my yard and has been here since :)

The picture is when we sent to see the foal- alpha is the bay on the left (Little did i know!!)

Re: The story how you got your horse

After Brook was sadly pts after nearly 4 years of loaning him I felt totally lost without an equine companion. So after much discussion with my OH we decided it was time to finally have my own horse. I spent weeks scanning various web-sites and finally a little chesnut Welshie caught my eye, he fitted exactly what I was looking for and was only one hours drive away. I phoned his owner for more info but sadly she had put him out on loan but promised she would contact me if he came back. Three weeks later Sue phoned and said that Tenor was back with her, I went to see him twice, fell in love with him and he's been a fab little chap for the 3 years that I've owned him.

Tilly is our 4 year old TBX mare, she had a pretty bad start in life and nearly died as a foal, she ended up at a dealers yard and was left in a field for a year with hardly any human contact. Our friend loaned her for a year but did nothing with her so she agreed that we could buy her from the dealer. In November we bought Tilly so that we could secure her future and hopefully give her a long and happy life.

Re: The story how you got your horse

My mum bought Parsley from a woman as a 2 year old for £200. Best £200 she ever spent.

Funny enough, she always regrets not buying the other youngster the lady had as well - who was indentical to Parsley but a bit bigger - 14'1/2 or so.

He's been in our lives now for 22 mid this year. I grew up with him as a baby, to a child to a teenager. We know each other like the back of our hands/hoof and to be honest with you all, I can't even begin to describe how much I love him. He literally is the best thing that has ever ever happened to me.

*wipes pathetic tear*

Re: The story how you got your horse

I got my 4yr old from the lady we bought our other horse from, about 30mins away from us. Previous to her having him, he and his full sister came from travellers who abused them quite badly (wont go into any detail). we werent really looking for a horse but my sister saw a pic of him and suggested we 'just go and look'.

Coincidentally it was my birthday on the day we went to see him and he was all skin and bone bless him and scared of his own shadow (where he got his name from). We went back to ride him and i loved him, despite him only being ridden about 5 times in his life.

We had him on trial for a month and bought him straight after and i wouldnt change him for the world!! he is my bestfriend :) and has come on in leaps and bounds since me having him, i also keep in touch with the lady who bought his full sister and she is doing brill too xx
