Re: Worst horse fall

I haven't really had many really bad falls (touch wood) but one of my most funniest accidents was in the riding school me and a horse called Shadow were cantering round ready for a jump and as we jumped over the highest jump i slipped back out of the saddle, lost my stirrups and landed on the horses hindquarters.

Re: Worst horse fall

I have fallen off hundreds of times. Most of them have just been aches the next day.

My worst fall (which isn't even bad ) was I was showing someone elses horse at a local club. I'd been before on the horse and done well and thought i'd take him again. Horsey was all tacked up and I was about to get on for my class. As soon as I got on he started bucking . The girth wasnt done up tight and I didn't have hold of the reins and he headed for the gate. The saddle started to slip (me with it) and I could see a bunch of jump wings right ahead of me, so I dived off and landed with a thud and the neddy trampled me. Went straight out the gate and onto the road :/

Luckily someone caught him about half a mile up the road. People were picking tack up all down the street! Horsey was fine (thank god) and I only had a few bruises and some soft tissue damage.

Thats not the worst thing that has happened to me, but this technically wasn't a fall!

I was schooling Calli in the paddock and at the bottom end there is a puddle right next to the gate. We normally school in the inside of the puddle on one lap round she decided to try and avoid the puddle but squeeze next to the gate and I whacked my shin full blow on the corner of the gate. You know when you stubb your toe? Well it felt like that. But I carried on riding even thought I couldnt put my foot in my stirrup. Anyway I came out and had to get off on the mountain block and hopped over to my stable. I rolled my joddies up and there was blood everywhere and a masive gash in my leg. That big you could see muscle bone, everything. Needless to say I went to A&E and had 4 stitches. Doctor said I was very lucky and if I had hit it an inch to the right I would have shattered my leg :s So I was on crutches for my 18th birthday!

I had a lovely fall today :-/ someone has set a pile of twigs up as a jump on the path we hack out on and today as Guinness was being so fab I though we would have a stab at it...going to the jump fine but then he paused for a split second before throwing himself in the air over this jump (cleared it by a mile v.impressive hehe) then stoppped dead afterwards..neadless to say I kept going and ended up on my back on the floor reins in hand haha

We both slipped on a smooth road and fell over - car behind us stopped! Cracked ribs and grazes - horse buggered off home!

Re: Worst horse fall

ok had plenty of falls from a very young age, but the worst has to be a couple of years ago when i was jumping cross country on my 15.3 mare.  We'd had an amazing time and i just though we'd do a couple more and then call it a day so we were heading back to the trailer when i aimed her at a spread.

As we approached it, a horse can galloping into view at the top of the hill, and i guess her eyes were on the handsome gelding and not the jump!  she jumped and next thing i know i flying (and not in the good way!) towards the ground.  I landed and rolled, and then something very heavy landed on me!  not sure what happened - as far as i know no one was looking, but i think that she hit the jump and either landed on me or tripped over me soon after.

I got up to see her also getting up, and without a backward glance she cantered off up to the gelding!!  well thats loyalty for you!!  Very high on adrenaline, i stumbled after her worried that she might run into the road nearby.  as soon as she was caught, i realised i was in a LOT of pain and i had a worryingly large dent in my arm.  but that wasnt all.  as i made it near the top, my vision went very strange.  its hard to describe, but everything went brighter (kind of like when you fiddle with the brightness of a photo on a computer)  until everything was white and i was literally blind!  if anyone has experienced anything like this please let me know!  I was a little worried and my friends looked after my horse while i sat in the dark in the trailer for around 20mins!  By then my vision was basically back to normal!

Got home and took care of my mare on autopilot and then went straight to bed and slept for 15hrs!  woke up and i looked like i had been hit my a lorry!! I was covered in bruises around my back and hips and ribs, my arm was swolen to twice its size and briused from my wrist to my elbow, and my head felt like it had been trodden on by a horse!!!   luckily it was my left arm so i could still write my a level exams!!

All I can say is thank god i was wearing a helmet or i could have lost a lot more than my eyesight for a few mins!  got back on my mare two days after the fall, and she was a dream! (even though i could only ride one-handed)  it was the only fall i ever had on her, and it was the only fall thats ever made me think twice about getting back on!!

It turns out that my arm was fractured but i only found out a year later, oops!

When I was cantering my mare and she tripped, bucked and i fell off on uneven ground which equaled being winded blacked out for a couple of minutes and 4 broken ribes, broken wrist and twisted spine I'm ok now and have fallen off 6 times since touch wood no broken bones.

Re: Worst horse fall

I have lost count of the amount of times i have fell off! But then again i am fast approaching 50!

My worst fall was when i was in cyprus and the horse i rode was abit of a chicken and ducked out at a fence 3 times. I took him out of the ring and went to pop him over the practice fence when he did it again and i hit the deck. Those that have ever ridden in and around the Med will know there isnt alot of grass about in September and i might as well have fallen on concrete. I ended up in hospital having my shoulder pinned and in a lot of pain.

My funniest was leading my daughters pony and riding my own back to the box from a few hours out hunting when Fern (the pony) decided to stop for a wee without any warning. Now my mare was on a mission as usual and she kept going, Fern stopped and i was literally lifted off my mare and deposited on the long, wet grass by the side of a road. Needless to say there were cars going past! It caused great amusement to the people in the car and made me stand up very quickly. Fortunately it was only my pride that was dented!!

Thats the shock of the break! I found that when I broke my toe..if anyone would have seen you they would have said you went white (no lip colour even)...it's almost passing out but you come back just before you actually go if that makes sense...it's your bodys way of dealing with the pain! :)
