Re: Worst horse fall
ok had plenty of falls from a very young age, but the worst has to be a couple of years ago when i was jumping cross country on my 15.3 mare. We'd had an amazing time and i just though we'd do a couple more and then call it a day so we were heading back to the trailer when i aimed her at a spread.
As we approached it, a horse can galloping into view at the top of the hill, and i guess her eyes were on the handsome gelding and not the jump! she jumped and next thing i know i flying (and not in the good way!) towards the ground. I landed and rolled, and then something very heavy landed on me! not sure what happened - as far as i know no one was looking, but i think that she hit the jump and either landed on me or tripped over me soon after.
I got up to see her also getting up, and without a backward glance she cantered off up to the gelding!! well thats loyalty for you!! Very high on adrenaline, i stumbled after her worried that she might run into the road nearby. as soon as she was caught, i realised i was in a LOT of pain and i had a worryingly large dent in my arm. but that wasnt all. as i made it near the top, my vision went very strange. its hard to describe, but everything went brighter (kind of like when you fiddle with the brightness of a photo on a computer) until everything was white and i was literally blind! if anyone has experienced anything like this please let me know! I was a little worried and my friends looked after my horse while i sat in the dark in the trailer for around 20mins! By then my vision was basically back to normal!
Got home and took care of my mare on autopilot and then went straight to bed and slept for 15hrs! woke up and i looked like i had been hit my a lorry!! I was covered in bruises around my back and hips and ribs, my arm was swolen to twice its size and briused from my wrist to my elbow, and my head felt like it had been trodden on by a horse!!! luckily it was my left arm so i could still write my a level exams!!
All I can say is thank god i was wearing a helmet or i could have lost a lot more than my eyesight for a few mins! got back on my mare two days after the fall, and she was a dream! (even though i could only ride one-handed) it was the only fall i ever had on her, and it was the only fall thats ever made me think twice about getting back on!!
It turns out that my arm was fractured but i only found out a year later, oops!
