Re: Worst horse fall

I didn`t fall of many times so far. The worst was as I was on the way home from a long hack. Sitting very relaxed and with loose rein in the saddle, riding along a narrow brook, when two ducks took off from the water with a lot of noise. The brook was covered with long grass so I didn`t see the ducks. My horse jumped in the air , twisted and I went out the side door straight into that little brook. Result collar bone broken in three places. I think if I wanted to fall in the water i would have missed it as it was so narrow.

Re: Worst horse fall

I have had a few bad falls over the 32 years of riding. I've not broken anything, yet!! I have had concussion twice. The first time i was riing a 17.2hh at a gallop and he bucked me off and i bounced on my head and the hat fell off, it was years ago when all hats had was an elastic strap to hold it on. The second time i was riding a 16.2hh showjumper and she took off in the indoor school and lost her footing and fell on me. I was pinned to the floor with her lying on my leg.

I have a few horses fall with me while in a canter and 2 have somersaulted on me. I always seem to have a bad fall if i come off but luckily not very often. I have loads of funny falls aswell like when Bramble cantered upto a jump and stopped in front of it and then decided she could do it and i came off over her head and pulled her bridle off with my thumb .

Re: Worst horse fall

The falls I have had are usually with the horse on top of me, not fun but now watch out for those concrete imprinted drives which have been varnished they are lethal, did not think about it as was worried about an elecric generator cable across the road so went on a block paved drive which I know is ok because I have the same but never entered my head about the adjoining drive which was this varnished imprinted conrete resulting with the horse falling on top of me then using my back to get up, thankfully had a wax long riding coat on which acted as armour plating.

It sounds so funny when you're reading stuff like this, but it's NOT at the time......

I've never broken any bones, only my glasses when I came off after the horse I was riding had a bucking fit in a stubble field, and when you're as short sighted as I am and have to drive home afterwards, it's a bit of a problem.......

And I managed to come off and sprain my ankle one time when jumping, the horse stopped and I didn't - it was a couple of months before I got married, and my Mother refused to let me ride again until after the wedding as she thought I may end up hobbling down the aisle in plaster or possibly even in a wheelchair.

Re: Worst horse fall

Someone at work was asking me about this the other day! I havent had a serious fall for a long time, touch wood! Memorable ones include cross country years and years ago - tried to turn too quickly after a jump and then woke up lying on the ground, no horse in sight. Got up to dust myself off and blacked out again. Have been thrown off a huge horse who did a massive buck in the school - apparently i somersaulted, lol! When i was a kid, the pony i was riding took off towards a busy road and i couldnt stop it, so i made a decision to throw myself off before i was in a road accident - i took my feet out of the stirrups, counted to 3 and then jumped off at a full gallop (pony was fine). No broken bones luckily but probably lost a few brain cells over the years with concussion!

My YO was jumping one of her horses in the paddock a few months and got bucked off - landed on the fence and broke a few ribs, ouch!

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.

Re: Worst horse fall

A funny fall that I once did was on a mock hunt when I closed the big wooden gate from horse back after we all had gone into the stubble field and the whole gate and oak post fell over causing my horse to spook and I tried to hang on to the horse but was dragged and reins broke in the middle then I had to walk and catch my horse in front of everyone feeling like a right idiot as horses have this habit of showing you up, mine usually did that in front of a packed pub with outside dining area.

Re: Worst horse fall

my worst fall was when i was around 11. I got bucked off  a friend's little pony and broke both bones in my wrist the pony's young owner was there when it happened. I held my hand in place but the rest of my forearm drooped below it. She ran off screamimg!! great help!! It happened on the first saturday of the summer hols and the cast came off the last saturday of the summer hols! it took me 2 years to sit on a horse tied to a fence with people either side just in case it "moved"!! Took me  a while to get my confidence back but was soon jumping etc!!

My stupidest fall was on a friend's appaloosa when i was 16  and i forgot he was about 2 hands taller than the pony i used to ride. We went under a branch............yep you've guesssed it it caught me and i rolled off backwards over his bum into a huge muddy puddle in full show gear!!! he carried on walking i had to run to catch up to stop him.

Re: Worst horse fall

I too wonder why we do it, but it's hobby and a way of life, even if it very painful on occasions and reading all posts some sound horrendous.  I've lost count of the amount of times I've come off, some of my more memorable ones have been one broken rib, one fractured collarbone, one shoulder dislocation, fractured upper arm, multiple fractures on top of shoulder (plates & screws), colles fracture of right wrist (again volar plate and screws), loads of bruises and cuts/scrapes, concussion, also was trampled on too.  I have a lovely horseshoe shaped scar on my shin.  It all for me seems to happen so quickly.  I/we can be fine one minute and then next on the floor, because the horse has spooked/bolted/whipped round/slipped.  I do remember on one occasion just not being able to stop until we came to the end of a track where it had a gate and we completely demolished that.  I've also come off on the road as well. This was on a pony I had just started to ride who had been out of work for sometime and I do think I certainly am not as confident as what I was.

Re: Worst horse fall

No broken bones yet thankfully. Think the worst would be jumping a grid with no reins or stirrups; whilst wearing waterproof trousers; in the rain. Horse stumbled in between fences so threw me off balance and as he took the next fence I came out the side door and hit the ground hard (I'm normally quite good at the graceful, slow-mo kind of falls but this one was a bit of a shock!). Looking back I was probably mildly concussed cos I came over very dizzy and had one heck of a headache for rest of day (not that I told the instructor this...), also think I gave myself whiplash as couldn't move my neck right for weeks (still get the odd twinge in it now, silly me for never getting it looked at!). Don't think it looked good cos everyone was asking if I was ok rather than telling me how hilarious I'd looked! One of my more amusing ones was coming off doing a turn that turned out tighter than expected in a jumpoff (the shame!), initial few seconds of that one were quite scary as I knew I was going to end up in front of the horses hooves. Luckily he did stop in time to avoid running me over (apparently I got up so fast it almost looked like I bounced!)

Re: Worst horse fall

My son came off his horse over a jump and it was funny as he landed on his feet holding the reins running alongside you could not have done that if you tried.
