RE: How can I get my lazy horse moving forward?

Lazy horses are sooooo fustrating!!!! I don't know if you have already tried but some things that worked for my gelding was hacking him more often as he enjoyed it and always perked up a bit, it also made him fitter which meant i knew he was definatley being lazy in the school and wasn't just tired. I swapped to a schooling whip as it was just easy to give him a tickle or a tap without having to change my position if he ignored my leg. I also found doing transitions worked and also ... when doing transitions say from trot to walk, just before he begins to walk, make him trot forward again actively, even if this means using a whip to give him a tap at first, in result this made him sharper to my leg and he is much easier to ride now. Hope ive helped xxx

My gelding used to be lazy too! When i ride i use a schooling whip on either side. i dont use them to tell him off just to back up my legs. i used them quite a bit at first but now i dont have to use them as much as he is more active in the school and i no how to get him going :) xx

I hope you have consulted with a veterinarian first to make sure that your horse is fully sound and healthy before you deem him "lazy"!  Many horses have physical problems and because they don't say "ouch" like we do, or yelp like a dog would, many, many horse owners are not aware that their precious horse is suffering in silence (that's the nature of horses).  It could be back pain, hock pain, or foot pain to name a few!  Good luck!

he also wont hack out alone and tends to nap quite abit, he has poor stable manners aswell. Checked by the vet he is 100% sound, tack all checked all fine and has perfect feet.
