Horse rearing when taking bit out?

So I started riding Alfie a few months ago, I am told he is better in an area but at the moment all we have been able to do is hacking. Out on hacks, he backs into ditches, rears, catleaps and bolts. If I try and slow down he flings his head right up, if that doesn't work he yanks his head down, he has been getting a bit better but what is getting worse is that when I take his tack off he's a star until I'm at the last part.. The bit, I always take it out gently but he keeps on rearing when I try and take it out, him being 16.2hh I let go when he does go up so I am not tugging on his mouth, he is fine getting his bridle on it's just taking it off.  So the last 2 times I have just undone the cheek piece and took it out gently he gets frisky but not head tossing or rearing. I'm worried that it's causing him pain, I hope someone can help, thanks in advance.

I would get his back and teeth checked just to make sure there isnt a problem there. xx

Re: Horse rearing when taking bit out?

Well yesterday I never rode  I wanted to see if his back/mouth was really hurting or was it just him (I really doubted it would be him). So I walked out to little laught with him on a halter and leadrope, Rory behind (another horse). So we went there so perfect then trotted a nice trot right up the hill, then went way back down in walk and walked back, Alfie was on a long lead since he was always such a good boy on the lead... He reared when I least expected it, the way he reared he smacked into me so I fell onto the road, I still had a hold of him with the one hand I was holding on with, but before I had time to even get up as I had just been knocked down he came crashing down on my ankle, I got up as fast as I could, since he reared up again straight after so I had time to get up. I was talking to him telling him he was okay, that I'm here, that we were going home and he stopped eventually. So I walked along the road home with Alfie and we had another 3 rearing fits luckily these times I was ready and he never hit me and I still kept a hold, I was talking to him all the time saying he was okay, he was safe and I am here for him but he started dragging me about and bolting all until his stable, even then when I was opening it as soon as I got out of the way he barged in and managed to hit his leg off the wall, he was fine no affect on his leg from the wall. After he was in he was just wanting cuddles and a scratch behind the ear.
