Any ideas why he's coughing and how to stop it?

Its not my pony!  A friends recently got a new pony on loan, and he was fine when he came but he's recently developed a really harsh dry cough in the stable.  She has him on straw bedding, but I do think he was on this before.  We wondered if he's been eating a bit of straw?  Any ideas of how we can stop him coughing and what might be causing it?  He seems fit and healthy in every other was, coat and eyes bright etc..

How long is the pony in his stable for? If he seems otherwise healthy then i would guess that perhaps the straw may be more dusty than he is used to, or he is being stabled for longer than he is used to. Can your friend maximise his turnout? You can buy cough mixture from a tack shop if needed.

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.

Perhaps think of an airways / breathing supplement, and I agree with what jbstar has said......also is he on hay or haylage? Hay can very dusty and have mould spores in that are bad for respiratory conditions - maybe soak it, or try haylage if possible.

Agree with the others re prevention.  If he has green discharge from his nose call the vet as the cough may have become an infection and may need treating with antibiotics.

He's coughing because something's irritating his throat  lol.  Usually dust related.  How to stop him coughing? - remove the cause  lol.  To find out if it's the straw, you'd need to try a different dust-free bedding.  Does he have hay?  If so that would need to be soaked/steamed/replaced with haylage.  Some horses can be sensitive to dust from hay that is stored nearby too.  If he coughs alot, I'd perhaps have a chat with your vet on the phone.

Thanks everyone. As I said he's not mine, just a friend asked me for advice and I said I'd look online! She's quite prepared to get the vet if needed.  He is on haylage and the same straw all the others are on.  its the large round bales and looks pretty dust free to me,  My mare is on shavings though so can't say for sure how good the straw is.  No discharge at all just the harsh dry cough.

Parsley was on straw when he was ill and my god did he love eating it. I've never seen anything like it. It made him gassy and he developed a really bad cough. Got the vet out etc and had to put him back onto shavings = cough gone. Get the pony off staw if you want the cough to stop - that's the answer from my experience. Good luck for your friend, I hope it stops. It's horrible to see them cough!

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

Absolutely agree with this, if a bacterial infection begins in this manner it can lead to gutteral pouch haemorrhage, that's how I lost my lovely Joe.  I will never ever treat a cough of any kind without vet intervention after what happened to him.

I've text the owner tonight as when I got to the yard In the pitch dark at 7.30 i thought I'd creep up and see if he was eating his bedding, and surprise surprise he was munching the straw! I bet that's whats causing the cough.  Anyway, I think she's getting the vet to check him over too.  Can't be too careful x
