Anyone feed haylage?

Just wondered if there is any supplememts or similar to feed along with haylage to stop horses being so fizzy on it??  Misty's full of it still, and I've been in contact with Allen and Page who were AMAZING by the way! They sent me free samples and pages of fact sheets regarding feed.  She did mention that it could be the haylage that affects Misty as in winter she gets almost  twice the amount she does in summer.  She lives in all year round but has a lot more turnout in the warmer months.  So, im planning on changing her feed to what they suggested, but i've got a sneaking suspision that it might not work without doing something about the haylage. Its all there is at our yard and all the horses have it.  x

I would say that it's the haylage making her fizzy too, could'nt you explain this to the yard owner and ask if you could buy some hay in ?

Yep but doesn't affect Buddy ahaha. Sorry not much help there, but maybe ask around the other owners who might fancy changing to hay then your y/o might see the need to diversify abit x

when i fed it to tommy he just got fat!(er)

do you not get turnout?  Thats probably a major reason for fizzy behavior?

Re: Anyone feed haylage?

I feed all of mine on haylage to try and keep their weight up. Loki loses weight very easily this time of year and if I was a horse I'd much rather eat haylage than horrible dry brittle hay lol....that's how I think of it

I'm not sure about supplements though, Loki is wired to the moon a bit at the moment but it's probably also got something to do with him being in a stable most of the time because he keeps escaping haha

Re: Anyone feed haylage?

i used to feed haylage through winter but was too rich for my little man and my girlie did get a bit hype .. the combo of haylage and no turnout didnt go too well although i find that her concentration is better when shes been stabled.

The only other thing i would think about would be to replace half the haylage ration with a hay replacer such as fast fibre or hi fi lite? this would give the fibre but without the haylage? i used fast fibre through the winter last year as hay was very sparse so was feeding little hay and more fast fibre..

I feed ours haylage which we cut off our field, so tbh it's not as rich as the commercial stuff as we dry it out so it's more like wrapped hay.....can't say they get fizzy from it either, as the others have said it's probably lack of turnout as well.

I do feed my old mare NAF haylage balancer, as she does get runny poos at times, and the balancer helps their tummies with pre and pro biotics and stuff - maybe the haylage is slightly upsetting Mistys tummy?

second the haylage balance from NAF, stepmum uses it on 2 of hers as they get a bit runny sometimes and fizzy, it settles them down quite nicely.
