hello, i have just aqquired an 8 yo conemarra, but he hasn't been worked for 9mtnhs due to various reasons! he used to be an amazing competiton pony - any tips on how to get him fit? im going to see a trainer soon and i need to build it in gradually so he doesnt get injured! just seeing if anyone has had similar experiences(:

Hi, 9 months is quite some time so I would suggest walking him in hand for 30 mins per day for 2 weeks then ride him in walk for 30 mins per day for 2 weeks then gradually introduce 5 minutes of trot work, so that you are riding for a total of 35 minutes, spread the 5 minutes into several shorter sessions. You could try building in some hill work into your training sessions, once he is feeling fitter gradually increase the riding time up to 1 hour including 10 minutes in trot. I followed a similar programme when my Welsh D was recovering from a pelvic injury, so good luck with him X

thanks:) he has been out in the field all the time so he is actually fairly fit! i was advised to take him for a short canter and he wasnt to puffed after that;)
