Winter Motivation

Hi,

Was just wondering how people are keeping motivated for the winter with the deep mud in fields, turning cold at night - not too cold, riding in dark ? keeping my horse clean is impossible the minute he gets turned out he rolls in the biggest mud patch he can find.

I find that on our yard a few on us are finding it hard to book indoor arena as alot of ppl are just booking 1 lesson after another so we go in the outdoor which we are waiting for lights to go up.

Working from 9 till 5 or sometimes later means that i can only ride in dark in week days.

I miss hacking out in week :(

What's everyones main aims for winter in terms of progression to do well............

Re: Winter Motivation

It is depressing from here on in I'll only see my horse in daylight at the weekends! Due to no school at all we are only hacking at weekends which sucks as I used to work her 5-6 times a week! Still I think a winter just ticking over will do us good and it'll be good fun getting fit and ready to go all ready for a busy season next year :)

Re: Winter Motivation

My two aren't ridden, and we're lucky in that our field drains quite well, so we don't get too much mud.

But we have no electricity, only solar lights, so their tea time is getting earlier and earlier, and even then I seem to end up poo picking in the dark, lol.

Re: Winter Motivation

Arhhhhh to the no school i would go mad, am trying to keep mine relatively fit which means i school him 4 times a week, jumping lesson on a saturday and hack on a sunday.

But sometimes with work its just impossible n then everyone needs a night off right ? lol

Its good that the fields have good drainage always a bonus especially when the weather gets bad.

Am currently working on - building his topline though lunging and sexy side reins lol and working him properly in a outline as he seem to sit behind the vertical - naughty boy ! I would also like to go out and do some show jumping competitions just at low key to vary it.

I always need to work towards a goal otherwise i cant get motivated. Anyone else same ?

Re: Winter Motivation

Motivation whats that ? Trying to get all the jobs done not enough hours in the day, the only time I will get a rest is at the end. My motivation went with nasty people trying to take the money from the self help group I run, Lara suddenly dieing, me having some sort of medical problem, then being kicked in the face. What I am worrying about is if I put another coat of paint on those doors will it dry, will I be able to get Sabrina out for a hack, what is the size of my fuel bill as the meters just been read, when will the new car bother to arrive, have I forgotten anything with the xmas dinner I organised for the group, have to organise the xmas party, wrap presents have I enough paper, write xmas cards, get the horseshoes for my son, the computer monitor on its way out old type CRT, will I get my new teeth by the time of the groups xmas dinner anyone for soup and brandy sauce.

Re: Winter Motivation

I enjoy doing the horses in winter so i don't need anything to keep me motivated . The only thing i need a kick up the bum for is doing the housework

Re: Winter Motivation

It's my first winter as a horse owner and I say bring it on

Teds all woolly and still out 24/7 which I'm happy about as once they start coming in overnight theres much more to do. I'm still managing to ride an average of 3 times a week as i work shifts. So cant complain as i do get to see him plenty in daylight at the moment. No school unfortunately but am sure we will get by.

Re: Winter Motivation

I'm fortunate in that I can ride during the day any day of the week.  I have been in the position of having only certain days to ride coz lack of daylight.  In those days I used to do things like massaging my horse, which I think is all helpful for their welbeing and comfort.

Re: Winter Motivation

I hate being stuck indoors whatever the weather.  Im lucky that i can ride during the day, but yard does have floodlit school and and indoor school which is useful at a push especially when we get the dreaded snow!!!!!!!!!

I love the cold crisp but sunny days when you go out for a hack and everywhere is quiet and its just you and your horse.  I hate the cold but going up to see my boy makes it alright.

I love the cold! You cant beat a crisp winter's morning hack, lovely! We do have an outdoor school but no lights as yet. I think in Winter i just like to make sure hes happy and warm, and just ride on the weekends. My hours at work may change soon so thers a chance i could ride one morning in the week, which will be the only advantage to working late!

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.
