car accident

My horse was involved in an accident when he bolted off and ended up hitting a car luckily no one was hurt apart from me when I fell off and my horse after hitting the car he damaged his knees badly and tore the muscles he is on the mend and doing well I was just interested if anyone else has gone through this and how long it took to heal and what was the best way of bringing him back in to work? The picture is a few weeks after he did it and was having his dressings changed

Re: car accident

Please forgive me for asking, but does Berti live with another horse called Leo......?

Thank goodness I've never had this happen to one of mine so I'm afraid I have no idea how long recovery will take, but I do hope that things are progressing well for Berti - the photo looks awful, blood always does, but everything looks clean and healthy, so that must be a good sign.

Fingers crossed for him to make a full recovery :o)

Re: car accident

Sadly yes when my mare was very young and in the learning stage of her life!  Same as you really, I came off when she did a broncho (my fault I was on my phone and did not guide her through a gateway so she clipped her hip and spooked) anyway, she bolted and came out ona road, thankfully no serious injuries as the car just clipped her (so I am told).  But the mental scars were horrific - she was not great in traffic anyway as a 4 year old, but was progressing, but after this no matter what we did she never really got over it and eventually I had to accept she would never hack safely on the road.

I spent 1 few years working on the issues, and even now some 12 years on she panics at any vehicle within a 10 yard radius of her - makes life difficult at times which is one of the reasons I built my own yard so I could cover all these "issues" and she could live life with little stress.

I think with some horses it is just their make up and how they are handled in the very early days - she hated vehicles before she came to me as a 4 year old so I guess I had no chance!

Good luck I am sure your guy will be fine.

He is doing really well he has no bandages on at all now and is allowed out in the paddock in the day so he happy he doesn't seen to worry about any car that has came on the yard but won't know how he does until he's allowed out on the rode but will take all the time he needs to recover physically and mentally but he seems ok so far that's for ur posts x

Yes, this Berti does live with another horse called Leo! Looks like we've been rumbled lol!

Thankfully he is now on the mend and happy to be getting some turnout, and as Berti is now allowed out in the paddock Leo is extremely happy as well!
