feeding valerian

 hi everyone,

I'm new to this site so hi guys..... So my question is about valerian, i have recently bought it for my lovely mare Beatrice.. A little info about beatrice, well she is lovely of course but so so hyper. She is afraid of everything when ridden unless she is lunged for half an hour before been ridden. So some basics she gets very little grass nuts, is turned out for 8-10 hours per day, 24 hour turnout in summer. I bred her so she has had no bad experiences, shes just nervy,  now her mother was the same a clover hill mare who was a very successful showjumper but she seemed to be better able to control her hyperness. Beatrice can sometimes be quiet relaxed in the indoor but take her on a hack and all hell breaks loose lol. I really love this little mare as i lost her full sister to colic and this is the last one of the family. All i want to have is some fun on her, i consider myself a experienced horse owner but this mare is putting me to the test.. So after much research i found out about valerian now being maybe a little old fashioned about horses i dont normally feed herbs etc but for the love of little Beatrice anything is worth a shot. Oh Beatrice has a friend Bobo who she loves soo much, they were born the same week and are both 5 year olds, but luckily Bobo is a dream hopefully some of her sensibility will pass over to her best friend. So please tell me any of your thoughts on Valerian... Thanks a mill

Re: feeding valerian

Well it's well known as a calmer / soother for both people and horses, so it's worth a try.

Maybe also think about something with magnesium oxide in, that too is a calmer, it's used in a lot of equine calmers.

Good luck with her xx

hi, dont know anything about valarian but i used to give my man striaght magnesuim from the helath shop when he was on box rest following a major op.  much cheaper than the equine calmers.  Also my stepmum has had brill results with D&H take control.  it turned her boy from a spooky silly scared of himself boy into a much calmer beasty!!

Re: feeding valerian

I feed my very hyper and spooky youngster valerian but I didn't feel I got any results, I'd maybe look at a feed change to chaff or pony nuts with added Mg. I found they were maybe 20p more either or there is a surprising high level of sugar in pony nuts. How does she carry her weight? Is she good to keep weight on? Any history on lami etc? I swapped my youngster on lo-cal with chaff and he's looking good on it. Carrying the right amount of weight with all the vits he needs and I think it works out at 28p a day!for him at 14.2hh. He lost the sharpness as he's not getting as much starch and sugar that was causing the problems! Even swapping onto a high fibre nuts instead might make the world of difference.

I tried Quiet Life (can get it in Boots), and I even took it myself when I was really stressed. Made Woody so much easier to train, works gradually and takes the edge off. He got three pills in the morning and three at night and after 6 weeks was basically a different, much happier horsey!
