Please help with my 3 year old!

Hi everyone!

I have a 3 year old cob who is quite round! She lives out at the moment but I am going to bring her in at the beginning of October. She will be out through the day for a few hours though.

I am trying to get her in shape before next season and unsure about feed! Any advice is greatly appreciated! x

if she's maintaining her weight well, then just keep to forage. I would give ad-lib hay and if giving a feed I'd stick to sugarbeet, alfa and hi-fibre cubes. If her weight is a bit of a concern then give speedi beet as its sugar free and laminitis trust approved and so are the hi-fibre cubes. My boy has just turned 5 and every winter he gets this diet (he's 15hh appaloosa x cob)and I've had him since 10 months old. He tends to lose weight around January time, I feed Alfa Oil as it has the higher oil content. likewise contact any of the big feed companies, Dengie and Dodson & Horrell will do a diet for you and Dengie will send out free feed samples xxx

If she's out in the day and it's cold but dry, then don't rug her, she can use some of the fat to keep herself warm - just put a rug on if it's really wet.

Can you put her in a paddock with very little grass and just give a bit of hay?

When she's in at night, give her minimal hay, and perhaps try putting it in 2 small holed nets so it takes her longer to get at it.

And I'd be tempted to just give her a small amount of Dengie hi fi lite and whatever supplements you feed, nothing more.
