Sorry....Another Mud Fever Post!

Hi - you have probably read numerous posts about mud fever before but I was just wondering if anyone is starting to use anything preventative before the mud returns in the next few months. My horse has suffered for 7 years now in the winter, some years better than others and always interested to hear opinions and solutions for Mud Fever. I read somewhere not to use a barrier cream but use a medicated powder when you turn out, but I'm sure this would slide off in the mud surely?!

I don't have a mud fever sufferer, but I am looking after two horses for a friend atm, one of whom does get it, and I think said friend uses Keratex mud fever powder.

It does stay on, it's supposed to be waterproof, but her field is SO boggy in winter, the poor horse does suffer. She's a hairy cob, but has her feather clipped off which does help keep the mud from getting so clogged.

Have you tried Equichaps from Equilibrium? They're quite expensive but are supposed to do a good job.

I use MFP (Mud Fever Protection) by IV Horse on clean dry legs before turnout (my horse is stabled at night in winter).  It does seem to prevent mud sticking and it just flicks off with a dandy brush when dry.  However, my horse doesn't have feathers, so I'm not sure how effective it would be if your horse does.

If you have mudfever do try using Equinat Aromaheel ointment. It's a natural antibacterial ointment, and I tried virtually everything else but this really worked for me.

I'm not sure about using it as a preventative before the mud returns, it's very sticky (rather like vaseline) and so wouldn't come off easily, and being waterproof I hope it helps your horse.

They also do an excellent Aromasalve First Aid ointment too, which (although not for mudfever) is an excellent product to have handy in the tackbox.

We have been treating our horses by using Hibiscrub (or another anti bacterial skin wash) and drying the legs. We then apply pig oil, which as I understand is a medical grade parafin. People alo use baby oil and similar.

The Friesian has pretty hairy flippers and a fair bit of feather. the Irish Draft is not so bad to deal with. Once applied the oilwaterproofs, and allows the legs to be just rinsed and air dried, lasting for a few days up to a week.

Does anyone use feed supplements for mud fever, like Mud Guard? Do they make any difference?

Let a horse whisper in your ear and breathe on your heart. You will never regret it. I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.
