Hey everyone

Well this summer pints is a nightmare!!! he has always had a cheeky side to being caught but this year he is worse than ever.

i can catch him once a week if im lucky. i go up wearing different stuff such as my office wear so he doesnt think i'll ride, sectioned off a small pen to corrall him into and corner him, feed, leaving headcollars on etc and nothing works.

he is in a field with our other horse josh and a pony, even if i bring them in he doesnt care.

winter he is awesome and will come galloping but no good to me at nights coz so dark and no schooling :-(

he is a brilliant horse and you'd think butter wouldnt melt but dont think i can go through another summer of him being a sod to catch. i cant ever arrange a hack with friends as chances are i wont catch him. if i leave him in 24/7 he swells and gets stroppy :-(

 

any advice would be awesome

Pints is exactly like that, i know he loves me etc. i go to the field and call him and he looks up whinies all the time at me, trots and then stops like he has hit a wall and wont come any further.

extremely disheartening, winter he is a different horse but working till 5.30 weekdays is no fun :-(

 I know you say you have tried this but take a lunge whip or something to the field with you and keep him going constantly, not trot not walk just fast all the time, and as he looks like he is getting tired go to walk up to him and if he trots off then keep him moving again, until he gives up which he will have to at some point.. It sounds horrible but this is what my Aunt had to do with her gelding for about a week and now he is fine.. It sounds to me like this is a battle of wills more than anything. 

Or you could try join up in the school or a small area when you do catch him, see if that makes any difference?

Or, as a complete last resourt you could attach him to a lunge line in a paddock seperate to the one that Josh and the other pony are in and attach him to something heavy or something in the floor and then when you go to catch him you have the lunge line that you can just reel in. And then don't work him when you catch him just fuss.. or just go into the field and walk up to him, or reel in the lunge line and give him a treat.. But the only thing is with this is the possibility of him getting his leg or something caught. This worked with a woman from the yard's horse, it was her last resourt to.. Wish you all the best x

Thank you very much, yeh we have tried that with the paddock. i havent kept on every night for a week or so tho and see how he is then. i always get so disheartened, he will whiny at me and come towards me but will stop dead. i spent 2 hours 1 boiling hot sunday trying to catch him, some days he gets bothered if i bring the other 2 in and others he doesnt care. he is clever.

i even had an outfit i used to wear to be able to catch him! black leggins, denim skirt, white vest and a pink cardi shrug thing! worked for a few days and thought awesome. he soon got used to that one tho! i left that stuff in the car and changed and went to just see him and give him a treat, thought yes weve cracked it but now we are back to round 1! no outift works! lol lil monkey that he is!
