Hey everyone

Well this summer pints is a nightmare!!! he has always had a cheeky side to being caught but this year he is worse than ever.

i can catch him once a week if im lucky. i go up wearing different stuff such as my office wear so he doesnt think i'll ride, sectioned off a small pen to corrall him into and corner him, feed, leaving headcollars on etc and nothing works.

he is in a field with our other horse josh and a pony, even if i bring them in he doesnt care.

winter he is awesome and will come galloping but no good to me at nights coz so dark and no schooling :-(

he is a brilliant horse and you'd think butter wouldnt melt but dont think i can go through another summer of him being a sod to catch. i cant ever arrange a hack with friends as chances are i wont catch him. if i leave him in 24/7 he swells and gets stroppy :-(

 

any advice would be awesome

Have you tried ignoring him ! We had a problem a while ago trying to catch my friends mare so we walked past her in the field and stood chatting, after a while she could'nt stand it any longer and had to come up to see what was going on lol. All horses are different though, it's just finding out what works for you, have you tried walking around with a wheelbarrow poo-picking, gradually get closer and maybe catch him that way. My boy is generally good to catch but he has his moments, eventually he just gives in lol. Well if it was me i'd get a stool, a good book and sit in the field with him, ignore him and make a fuss of any horse that comes near. then 2nd day i'd groom other horses and ignore him if he nudges you, quick pat and then push him off and leave field, then the next day if he asks to be groomed then spend 5 mins grooming him, repeat this until he only associates you with pleasant things in field, then start to occasionally catch and bring in then gradually reintroduce work. Whatever you're doing with him at present his game of you cant catch me is def more interesting to him so i think if it was me i'd be looking to do more varied things. Hope this helps!

thank you, but yeh tried so much.

ive even stayed out the field for 2 hours - if he walked i made him trot and he trot i made him canter until he was knackered. he wanted to give in but still wouldnt after 2 hours. i was more shattered i think so i had to give up.

ive thought of getting a behavouralist to come out and see if they can help but being close to winter now i think it seems pointless as within a month or so he'll wanna be caught anyway.

My fiance cant stand it as we'll catch josh no probs but pints no way. ive had everything checked so he isnt even associating riding with painful experience. ive gone out and caught him and just fussed him to he doesnt think everytime he see's me its to ride but then the next day he is a swine again, everytime i get near him i feel the need to just bring him in to ride as might not get the chance again!!!

im laughing coz it sounds so ridiculous but ive tried so much :-(

thanks Wagonsroll i will try that, the trouble is it takes hours. ive sat out there a few times on my phone or my magazine and josh is always fussing me but pints wont come near me for ages :-( he is such hard work lol x

What a pain, you must get so stressed! I loaned a mare once who was a b***h to catch, i used to throw down a bucket of nuts with the headcollar positioned to put on and get her that way...sometimes lol. Kelly marks' book perfect manners has some great tips in there about catching horses i think. Dont give up

I'd look at a problem with basic manners in the field as if hes not running away he's not scared he's pulling it. I'd get kelly marks prefect manners book and have a read thro. If it presists I'd work him in the field so drive him until he realises if he doesn't let up approach he won't get to stop. I had a horse who was a nightmare to catch and would threaten if you want to catch him. I did this for 30 mins until he realised I was controlling his movements and was boss. I walked over to him and let him go again after a few mins with him grazing. He had this done once and he's never done it again.

It has been calculated thay any two thoroughbreds picked at random will on average have more than 13% of their genes in common.

Yes highlander i've done that too! Only thing is the mare i was having probs with now lets you catch her just wont move forward, just plants and says 1.5 tons what are you gonna do about it. I was thinking with her Kas i actually keep her in a smaller paddock with one other horse and bring in the easy horse and she has to follow as they are now pair bonded, but that brings other issues in itself!

i sound so stupid and you must think yeh right kas but i have tried soooooo much, he is pure naughty about it. a complete arse!!! lol

we made a small paddock for him as he doesnt mind being away from josh, josh has another pony for company so all are happy but pints will jump out if he gets fed up and then back to round 1.

he is so stubborn and ive tried keeping him moving until he was knackered!!! lol, his nose was on  the floor but would still walk on as soon as i move a step towards him. i walk in the field and dont make any eye contact with him and he will still walk away. ive thought of getting him a headcollar with blinkers but cant find anything :-(

ps piccie above was the day i was keeping him moving, he was looking lush but very naughty and majorly annoying mummy lol

cracker has had parelli training but she's the same.   never used to be like this but had lami bad last year and this year she has been brought in and put out at night  , had a grazing muzzle on.  In the small starvation field got our bond back , followed me around, back in herd doesn't want to know me. which is a bit disheartening.    Others can get her, but she gallops off is she sees me.   have tried allsorts.  once caught no problem will walk at the side of me as if nothings wrong.  I can whistle her and her head shoots straight up, takes a few steps towards me, stops then stands in the field and looks at me as if to say "chase me".    tried all the parelli tricks but won't come to me.  sarah says its because she thinks she is coming in or having the muzzle on and wants to stay out and play !!

we left a small sectioned paddock where the water troughs were and i was tie the fence and then corner him, that worked for sometime and thought wow ive found something that works!

now he wont go near it as he knows i want to catch him. sometimes its not even to ride, its just to fuss him after a long day at work. thats when it upsets me. he is such a loving horse when ive got him but in the field from may to october he is a sod.

josh gets upset if i bring him in for good and its not fair on josh to bring him in all the time aswell just coz pints is naughty xx
